I'd have had something to say to the carer!

They should be more vigilant as he is obviously prone to this type of behaviour!

I sometimes help out on a voluntary basis with people who have learning disabilities. As a volunteer you're not supposed to be looking after people who have behavioural issues, but sometimes the difficult behaviour has simply never occurred before - as I discovered when a young man in my care became violent and began punching and kicking me. Fortunately no serious damage was done and he was incredibly shamefaced and apologetic once he'd calmed down.

So what do you do? Read any paper and it soon becomes clear that there are plenty of people on the streets who are capable of violence and sexual assault and yet do not have a disability. Would it be fair to continue to tolerate them on the streets (and many of them are known thanks to their history/record) and yet lock up disabled people just on the off-chance? They are still adults and human beings with the same rights as anyone else.

I don't really get offended by words. I have trouble actually understanding the concept.

    Yes, clearly!

Personally, I use the words I was brought up using

Fortunately most of the rest of us are capable of learning and changing.

I didn't say anything about "condemning". But as I said, people have a right to be free from molestation. With competent people we punish them when they do things like that, but punishment might not work on this guy, who could well be literally incapable of learning. The only choice there is is to keep him out of harm's way.

Well, most of society the people whom you would "keep out of harm's way" for the rest of their natural lives would probably find the word "condemn" fairly appropriate.

Anyhow, at least have the decency to keep to your own rules, and refrain from having "petty, arbitrary problems with specific words".
  • SevenCL - retard can be used in lots of contexts. It isnt usually bad form to have fire retardant fabric or foam in sofas. You didnt use it in that context, you were really clear.

However you did make an important point - SevenCL - it is all about you, everything is about you. Whatever you do, keep the discussion going about appropriate and inappropriate words because that makes sure it stays all about you.

OP - I think you did the right thing, and the carer has a heads up to keep an eye out. Hope you are okay.

"Retard" is a medical term, not nasty or insulting.

I disagree completely that it is wrong to use wordsthat people find insulting. People who are insulted by the mere use of arbitrary words have a problem and should seek help getting over it, not demand the rest of the world tiptoe around them, keeping track of what words they've now decided are unacceptable.

Actually, if you want to make such claims, check your facts.
"Retard" can be a medical term, but as a verb.
"!!!!!!" was a medical definition that has fallen into disuse.

Even so, how did your diagnose the man as fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of "!!!!!!" as opposed to one of the other categories in the spectrum?

No word has any intrinsic sense or meaning. The meanings of words depend entirely on how they are generally understood. So if a word is generally considered to be offensive, then it is offensive. There is no other criterion.

"There is nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so".

And you are still behaving like a nasty, sniggering schoolboy. Grow up.

Apologies to everyone but Seven for my bluntness, but the noun "c***" means "female genitalia".

You see? Perfectly possible for a word to have an ostensibly-inoffensive meaning and be highly offensive.

On topic: well done OP for pulling them up on their inappropriate behaviour. As others have said it could have been a young woman/teen or someone who felt unable to speak up in that sort of situation. It could possibly have happened to someone who was already being abused and would only fuel the thought that their abuser was right and its their fault (when it absolutely isn’t).
Mental illness or not, this sort of behaviour is completely unacceptable.

Off topic: I have had to tell off my nan before for using the ‘n’ word – to her it’s a shade of brown (she is 91 and lived in an era where it was an acceptable word). I personally find it a horrible word but you cant win when you hear rappers etc calling it to each other/saying it in songs!
As for the ‘c’ word – Its another word I really dislike, though think nothing of it when I read it in a martina cole book!
