  • I already have a Vanquis card that charges a ridiculous interest rate. I pay it in full every month and in four years they have made nothing from me. They started me on a limit of £250 and now i'm on £3000. I wanted another card to use purely for internet purchases as i have a habit of impulse buying things that seem like a good idea at the time. During the sign up process i was asked to choose a minimum limit and i chose £300-£500 as i don't want to spend more than this online each month. I have been with Santander/Abbey National for over twenty years and despite never having owed anyone anything they have consistantly refused to give me a credit card. They recently invited me to a branch to upgrade me to their 1-2-3 account (their idea not mine) after spending half an hour telling me how great it was they told me i couldn't have it. They must know i pay Vanquis every month as i do it through them. Somehow i seem to be regarded as a high credit risk. But i thought i must surely be worth taking a chance on for a few hundred pounds.

I wouldn't hold out on Santander.

I'd been with them for years since Alliance and Leicester, good salary coming in, never overdrawn, never missed a DD etc. Just needed a card for work expenses.

    "Computer says no"

We are far removed from the days when the bank manager was the pillar of the community, someone you spoke to and understood individual circumstances.

Now you're just a number - a set of parameters in an algorithm.

I applied for this 2-3 days ago and got that 'We'll look at it' type screen. Been a Capital One card holder for over a decade. Terrbile low limit for years then it shot up now sitting at £3,000.

Anyway got 2 emails from C1 this morning no mention anywhere of Luma saying here's my temporary login details and thanks for registering (news to me).

Logged in (changed security info as required) and yes there's an account live and ready. Pants limit of £200 but good as an emergency card I suppose.
  • I'm still waiting to hear from them. So far nothing, not even one of those standard reply e-mails. Apparently something is happening on the 16th of this month that means banks have to transfer all payments in and out within a week if you want to swap to a new bank. I will be dumping Santander but i don't know where i will go.

The web front end is branded as Capital One. The card itself is branded Luma though. AFAIK C1 run it in conjunction with another company, just that C1 take care of the technical side.

The limits are low, presumably as it is a 'poor credit' card.
Truth be told I haven't used mine yet, keeping it for occasional business expenses and the likes.

I too would like to get rid of Santander, but have struggled for an alternative.

Ulster Bank customer service are appalling.

I was with First Trust but they decided to close the local branch, meaning I'd need to travel into the city to cash cheques etc.

Bank of Ireland I don't really trust local banks.

    Barclays seems too corporate.

Halifax looked like a good bet until I learnt they're part of Lloyds TSB who I've fallen out with over the debt management plan I used to be on.

Nationwide were the last possible contender.

If I was doing it I would double check every detail - moving from First Trust to Santander, either through mistake, inteptitude or (hopefully not!) on purpose, FT got the digits on the reference of one of my direct debits transposed. Santander created it as is, as a reference is just a text field.
However it meant my (useless) debt management company couldn't find the (by this stage substantial) amount I had paid in that month, which led to Lloyds TSB giving off etc.

    Got my Luma card.

Phoned up to activate (everything was "Capital One") but still got put through to an agent who said the call had been flagged as I was already a Capital One customer and did I know the Luma card was really just Capital One? Errr... I suppose so.

Anyway, card binned just wanted a 2nd for a relative and the agent did that over the phone.

Damn low limits but perfect for emergencies or van hire etc.
  • Hi i am just wondering if any one could help me, when you applied for your Luma Credit card, which credit agency did the company use to search?
  • I applied for this card a couple of weeks ago, and didn't hear anything back so ended up forgetting about it. Yesterday I received a letter from them in which they apologised and said there was an error and needed more info, aswell as asking me to sign the credit agreement and to send it back to them. I know my credit history is a bit iffy and highly doubt they will accept me, though I guess I shall have to just wait and see!

I'm curious though, did this letter mean that they would be contacting me for more information? It confused me a bit as it also said sign the agreement and send it off, your card should arrive in 7-10 days..
  • these are a absolute joke of a company charging intrest when you have paid the remaining balance ( beware )
