They'd need to employ people who are capable and trusted enough to use some common sense and make a judgement call.

To an extent they do, since most airlines will correct typos free of charge, even low cost carriers like Ryanair.

thanks for proving my point malkie - jeffels is not in that rather comprehensive list you provided

It's an obvious mistake - how can jeffels be a first name. they should use common sense and just charge you the £40 admin. I'd be inclined to send a polite letter to whoever is at the top at Jet2 and ask them to reimburse the extra 200 euros

I'll try that thank you, although I don't hold out much hope!

It's not often I agree with the term rip off, but in this case I do. £40 max, what's with the difference in fare bit. quite obvious that the surname and forename have just been put in back to front. No scrub that, I say do it for free!
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

It's not a comprehensive list, merely the first hit on google, and only covers obviously 'western' names. Eastern european, middle eastern and beyond were not included, where 'Jeffels' could quiet easily be a first name.

There are no rules on what you can and cannot call your child.

There is no bullet-proof way to tell the difference between genuine error and someone pulling a fast one.

When you book a flight you are forced to check your details at least once before pushing 'confirm', so unfortunately the OP only has themselves to blame.

If the airline uses this as a revenue stream then it keeps the costs of flights cheaper for those people who check their details before buying.

The chances of you finding someone to sell 1 ticket who had the exact, but reversed, name of your wife is so ridiculously small, I think anyone with common sense could assume that it didn't take place...

Though I'm sure if you just hung up and tried again a few times (or even risked it and changed it at the airport), the OP could have had it done for free. Even Ryanair have been known to do it occasionally!

Plenty more I can think of, and as Jeffels is the name of a place, I have no doubt that somewhere someone will have been named after it! ;)

(I've found a Jeffel, and according to WhitePages there are at least two in the US!)

Ryanair will correct an obvious mistake without charge, and not occasionally, they do it all the time. However, this is not a case of a few letters being out of place. I also noted earlier that had the mistake been noticed straightaway they may have been allowed a free change, but for whatever reason the OP failed to check their paperwork for several months.

Reversing the surname and first name IS an obvious mistake...

They may have been allowed a free change straight away, but as I noted, they may have been allowed a free change NOW - it does happen...

And why on earth does them "not checking the paperwork for months" surprise you? Once I've checked my flight details once, I have no need to periodically review them...

    I agree with this.

I booked a return flight for my partner and I in March from Faro airport in Portugal back to Newcastle, flying second week in September. With baggage, this came to around 150 euro each.

When I came to do my online check-in 20th August 2012, I noticed there was an error with her name on the online check -in form. When I enquired about correcting the details, I was informed of a 44 euro charge (pretty pricey for an admin fee I thought), then only to be informed that I would also have to pay the difference in the flight charge. Wait for it.... I have now been charged an EXTRA 212 EURO, yes AN EXTRA 212 EURO, just to change the name on the check in form. This isn't changing the details from one person to someone completely different, this was merely due to the fact that my surname was in her christian name section on the form.
As we had no other choice I had to pay. Can anyone else beat 212 euro for a typo error change. I feel utterly utterly ripped off about this, the small print says that this is the rules, but for me just another example of the airlines ripping the consumer off!:mad::mad:

However, it's worth explaining the mistake and hoping for a rethink by Jet2.
