It's an obvious mistake - how can jeffels be a first name.
they should use common sense and just charge you the £40 admin. I'd be inclined to send a polite letter to whoever is at the top at Jet2 and ask them to reimburse the extra 200 euros

of course jeffels can be a first name - pretty much anything can be a first name!

And why on earth does them "not checking the paperwork for months" surprise you? Once I've checked my flight details once, I have no need to periodically review them...

I can see that. Problem is the OP apparently didn't even bother to check once, at least not until it was too late.

And you know that how? Maybe they did check, just not well enough, at the time?

This forum is starting to get ridiculous. If it's in the terms and conditions then yes, there is no legal issue and Jet2 have completely in the right.

However, what the OP is claiming is not that they've broken the law, or demanding the money back, but that it's a "rip off". Now that's a rather subjective term, but I cannot see how anyone could possibly believe over €250 is a reasonable charge for an operator to spend 1 minute swapping the first name and surname around on the system...

    Legal - yes
Moral - debatable but for the purpose of this discussion, yes
A reasonable amount - categorically not

Because it's a reasonable assumption that he would have then noticed the rather large mistake in his partner's name. If he did check and didn't notice he really should check more thoroughly next time.

It has been said a thousand times before: the charges for name changes and other associated charges (eg fare uplifts) are to stop people buying bucket-loads of cheap seats and then selling them on. A small typo will be corrected free of charge normally but this was an entire change of name, albeit transposition of first and surname. The fault lies with nobody but the OP - they input the details.

I fully agree he should have checked more thoroughly - hence why I haven't said that Jet2 should be obliged to refund anything.

All I'm saying is that the consensus that a €250 fee to swap the order of a name (regardless of that charge being wholly legitimate) is a reasonable charge is utterly ridiculous.

IMO it makes no sense to apply terms like 'reasonable' or 'unreasonable' to airline charges. The charges are what what they are and as long as they are made clear to the passenger in advance the airline can charge whatever they like as far as I'm concerned. Few of the products offered by the airline industry are in any way priced according to their actual cost so I find it irrelevant how little (or much) effort is required to make the change on the part of Jet2.

Charges are just what they are - neither reasonable nor unreasonable? Right...

Not that I think it makes any sense... If Jet2 decided to start charging €1000 per bag for all luggage - would you defend that as "it's just an airline charge - it can't possibly be unreasonable because they charge more than it costs them for other stuff as well"?

(Note the enormous difference between justifiable (which this charge is as it's detailed in the T&Cs they agreed to) and reasonable...)

What if some are charges and some are penalties?

Are you from the US of A by any chance jpsartre ?
