Rip off jet2???? You decide!!!!

I booked a return flight for my partner and I in March from Faro airport in Portugal back to Newcastle, flying second week in September. With baggage, this came to around 150 euro each.

When I came to do my online check-in 20th August 2012, I noticed there was an error with her name on the online check -in form. When I enquired about correcting the details, I was informed of a 44 euro charge (pretty pricey for an admin fee I thought), then only to be informed that I would also have to pay the difference in the flight charge. Wait for it.... I have now been charged an EXTRA 212 EURO, yes AN EXTRA 212 EURO, just to change the name on the check in form. This isn't changing the details from one person to someone completely different, this was merely due to the fact that my surname was in her christian name section on the form.
As we had no other choice I had to pay. Can anyone else beat 212 euro for a typo error change. I feel utterly utterly ripped off about this, the small print says that this is the rules, but for me just another example of the airlines ripping the consumer off!:mad::mad:

  • Had you noticed the mistake straightaway they may well have changed it for free. Sorry, I fail to see the "rip off", you made a mistake that amounts to a complete name change, and have to pay accordingly.

Would it be cheaper to buy a new flight?
  • Not cheaper for a new flight no, looked at that too. Well if you believe that a name change warrants a 212 euro charge that is quite rightly your opinion, but as you've probably gathered, it is most certainly not mine! An admin charge possibly, but 212 euro for a name change, most certainly not!!!!

Could be worse - many airlines will not allow you to make name changes, so you would have to buy a new ticket. Take it as a costly learning experience - it is your error, not theirs.

It's to stop people buying cheap tickets then selling them off for more closer to the flight date.

There's no way to know the difference between a genuine error, and someone trying to make a few quid on the side.

Your mistake, which you admit, so I'm not sure you can complain.

I agree that is the main reason for the charge but companies are increasingly looking for ways to offer a low headline price and then make their money on any extra they can. It's everywhere -- restaurants charging big for drinks, insurance companies charging for change of address regardless of a move to a better neighbourhood, mobile phone companies charging big for use abroad etc.

The lessons learnt are -- read the small print carefully and double check you don't make any mistake.

For obvious typos, I do feel it's good customer service to change these without charging the difference in fare. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be case here. Wouldn't call it a rip-off in either case as you had plenty of chances to check the details at an earlier stage.

Her name hasn't changed, so what have you paid for?

You made a simple online error, one of your mates isn't going instead are they!

    I agree but ...........

They'd need to employ people who are capable and trusted enough to use some common sense and make a judgement call.
For better or worse, everything is costed down as far as possible now in order to keep prices down and profits acceptable.
This means staff on minimum wages who are given no [or very little] discretion and must operate and adhere to procedures. This allows companies to operate with minimal [non-productive] expensive supervision without the worry of employees giving away the profits.

We're all to blame - if it is in fact a bad thing - for pursuing low cost at the expense of service and flexibility.

Me? I'm reasonably happy with the way airlines do it, I do however like to err on the side of good service etc. when it comes to buying big ticket stuff like cars and will usually chose a main dealer I know well rather than a car supermarket

You pays yer money etc ..............

It's an obvious mistake - how can jeffels be a first name. they should use common sense and just charge you the £40 admin. I'd be inclined to send a polite letter to whoever is at the top at Jet2 and ask them to reimburse the extra 200 euros
