Possible to avoid having card-reader on Nationwide Flex account?

Seems that cardreader is really needed entirely randomly, which confirms my own experience. As annoying as it is to have to use this gadget at unpredictable times, I suppose it increases my peace of mind that no fraudster could clean out my Flexaccount. Now, if Nationwide only did something to encourage me to keep more than 50p in it..................0

I never use my card reader to log in, I use memorable data.
