Possible to avoid having card-reader on Nationwide Flex account?

Thats the OLD way.No change there. That is exactly how one always has had to login without the card reader.
Memorable data and three digits from the pass number.
Even before the introduction of the card reader a memorable word and 3 digits from the passnumber was the required method of logging on.
I tried to login this morning and the 3 digit method had gone - to be replaced by an entry to "memorable data" (one of three) and a single entry for "passnumber" NOT the 3 digit option.
It refuses to accept my entries and insists I have to re-register.
Give it a try and let me know how you get on.0 -

I have tried it.
There is no change.
I suspect you have a virus or similar that has redirected your login attempt.
Nationwide would never ask for your full passnumber or all your details online.
There is a note to that effect on the login page.0 -
I have never been able to send a payment without using that card reader to that point I have several dotted all over the place, work, the car laptop bag etc.
Amount does not matter, payee does not matter (even when transferring to my son Nationwide acc to Nationwide Acc) it is very annoying and causes me to use N/W less for transfering money. I will, where possible use the debit card to do the same process, EG; paying credit card bills on the credit card site with the debit card rather than transferring from the Nationwide site to the credit card.
This (the bold bit) is possibly the reason why you are asked to use a cardreader each time.
Making few payments from Nationwide -> it's more unusual when you do make a payment -> cardreader required.
If you made regular payments from Nationwide, then that would be seen as 'normal' behaviour, and you would only be asked to use a cardreader for new payees.Thats the OLD way.

No, Nationwide's site has not changed.
You may have a virus on your computer or may be on a phishing site. Check it out, full virus scan, change passwords and login details for other sites too.0 -

I use Nationwide as my main account and as you say the card reader is normally only required for new payees although recently I have set up 2 new payees which didn't need the cardreader.0 -
I really do find the Nationwide mania with the card reader to be such a turnoff that I don't use this account at all now. I've had the account for over 10 years and occasionally check back to see if they've got the message that they have made their site so convoluted that there are slicker and equally secure options available with their competitors.
Barclays and NatWest only force you to use the card reader (interchangeable unit with Nationwide) when you are setting up a new payee for the first time. This I am happy to live with. They never ask you to use it to make a payment to an existing payee. Lloyds is even better - they don't have a reader. They telephone you and you enter a code - again they only do this when you set up a new payee.
I would like to see Nationwide explain openly why they make their online banking more of a hassle than the major clearing banks and how much, if anything, they have reduced fraud as a result.0 -
Just went back to Nationwide account and the full Verisign Certificates are in place - and it def asks for full passnumber.
The statement on the NW website says they will never ask for your details IN AN EMAIL - not on the website.0 -
I transferred from the Nationwide about 15 minutes ago and the log in details are the same as they have always been. I wasn't asked to use the card reader and it was for a larger amount than the 6 transactions the other night.
I would strongly suggest that you run a virus scan and run Malwarebytes as there is definitely something on your pc if it is asking for the full number. You can confirm by calling them on 0800 302010.0 -

If you use the account regularly, then you'll rarely be asked to use your cardreader.
See noh's post, where he says how he has even set up new payees without using the cardreader.
For the first few weeks, you'll need to use it, but I haven't now needed to use mine for months.Just went back to Nationwide account and the full Verisign Certificates are in place - and it def asks for full passnumber.

There is definitely a problem on your computer. You need to check this out asap. The real Nationwide website is not asking for the FULL passnumber, but just for three digits from it, in the same way as it always has.0 -

This is not true. I use it regularly and have done for years, but I am still asked to use the card reader at random times
I made another transfer tonight. It was to a new payee which I set up a few days ago. I had never paid this payee before and didn't need the card reader.0
