If you grabbed the £200 on offer from the co-op, then you can use that reader as backup. I've left mine at work just in case I need it. They all work the same. A friend uses a Barclays reader for Nationwide as it seems better quality.

Indeed, I use my NatWest, RBS, Ulster Bank and Nationwide readers interchangeably. RBS group let you request new ones for free too, so you can get loads of spares if you need to for whatever reason
  • I don't use my Nationwide account for sending payments simply because of the card reader, when it made me use it to send £25 to my own account at another bank when the payee had been set for 10+ years I gave up!

I log in with memorable data and only transfer in what I need to be in the account.

    Interesting...

This would tick me off. Have you contacted Nationwide about it?

No it doesn't really bother me as I have accounts with other banks that are very easy to set up and make payments from - I just use my Nationwide account for paying the mortgage and cheques and for eligibility to their various flexclusive offers.

Which ones? Highstreet or small ones?

I mainly use Halifax/BOS for payments, their system really works for me. If you set up a new payee then they phone you on one of the numbers they hold for you (you choose which one) and you have to enter the secure code which is displayed on screen. I have managed to do this fine from my iphone, as you can write down the secure code before answering the phone.

Obviously that is not the best if you are travelling out of UK, I think Santander send a text with a code when you set up a new payment. I also use First Direct but I can't remember what security they have for new payments.

I recently opened a new account with Metro Bank. The process is face to face, and one of the advantages that the chap told me about was that they do not use these card readers.

I've been thinking about Metro Bank! Hmm...

I find it quicker to use the card reader to sign in than use remembable info. Existing payees then don't need to card reader.

BTW Ask in branch for a replacement reader if you want a 2nd.

I did 6 transactions to existing payees last night and was asked for the card reader for every one of them. If I'd known I would have signed on with the card reader.
