Possible to avoid having card-reader on Nationwide Flex account?

Right now, for some reason, I don't need to have a card reader to manage my Lloyds TSB account. I simply get an automated phone call and verify new payees there. It's nice.

Is it possible to have something similar with the Nationwide Flex account, or am I forced to always take their card reader with me on holiday?

Update: I have opened an account with Metro Bank, which doesn't use those stinking card readers! Plus, the debit card has no charge on purchases abroad unlike high-street banks. Customer service was great.

Just how many new payees do you set up/expect to set up when you're away on holiday?

I can transfer from Nationwide to all my other existing accounts (need the card reader to set up of course) without the card reader. I even log in without it (by choosing 'log in using memorable data' instead).

Just in case... you never know who's having an emergency. And I don't want to lumber that fragile card reader around (my NatWest one stopped working once when a friend desperately needed money).

(No, the friend wasn't a Nigerian prince.)

In such an emergency you'd transfer to another current account, ie existing payee, of yours (maybe keep LTSB open and ticking over since they don't currently have card readers?), and send the money from there.

    Good idea.

But in general, is there a way to refuse having a card reader or limiting its usage?

    In a word: NOPE.

I have even at times been required to use my card reader when making payments to previously set up payees.

Really? Maybe it's the payment value that triggers the additional security? My transfers to existing payees rarely exceed £1K.

Yeah, even had to use the reader for a payment to one of my own accounts at a different bank. It seems to be fairly random when they want me to use it and when not.

If you grabbed the £200 on offer from the co-op, then you can use that reader as backup. I've left mine at work just in case I need it. They all work the same. A friend uses a Barclays reader for Nationwide as it seems better quality.

I never use my card reader with my Flex account. Log in with memorable data instead. From memory, the login is on right hand side of page.

Yes it seems totally random as to whether you are asked to use the card reader or not.

I have always been asked to use it even for existing payees and relatively small amount until recently. The last couple of transactions have gone through without being asked for it and one was for a large amount.

I always sign in using memorable data, but that doesn't stop the system asking for the card reader to be used for a transaction.
