Hi is there any chance someone could explain what all the abbreviations you all post mean? I lurk on here a lot but sometimes find it hard to work out what you are talking about! Thanks

    TTC - try(ing) to conceive
    BD - baby dance (sex)
DTD - do the deed (sex
    Ov - ovulate or ovulation
    AF - aunt flo (period)
    OPK - ovulations testing stick
POAS - pee on a stick
    BFN - big fat negative
    BFP - big fat positive
    TLP - tiny little positive
    CD - cycle day
    DPO - days past ovulation

THat's all I can think of right now.

  • Ive also got a question about my situation. Im already a mum and I conceived naturally without any problems with my ex. Ive got a new partner who has children with his ex but they had icsi as she had polocystic ovaries and he had adnormal shaped sperm. How long do you think we should try for before seeking help? Is it possible for this abnormal shaped sperm to fertilse one of my eggs and if so would this mean that therewould be a higher chance of miscarriage?

Sorry, I don't know, but someone else might.

Does your partner remember what percentage abnormal sperm was diagnosed? If you know what percentage of 'normal' sperm you're working with then there's always a chance- remember of the 250 million-odd sperm per ejaculation less than 50-odd make it to the fallopian tubes ad it only takes one sperm to fertilise! Depending on the percentage of abnormal sperm and the extent of their abnormality (e.g. can they swim?) they might not make it to the egg leaving the healthy sperm to do the business...

I suppose (and I'm definitely no expert here!) that it would also depend on why they had to go through ICSI- was it because of the ladies PCOS or was it the sperm morphology or were both of their diagnoses poor making natural conception a small possibility?

I think the criteria for referral seems to be different depending where you live and your GP but these are the general NHS guidelines http://www.cks.nhs.uk/infertility . Your partner can also improve his sperm through a healthy lifestyle so I don't know if that's a possibility for you (He could be some sort of ironman athlete so apologies if this isn't an option! :) ) i.e. supplements, good diet, exercise, no hot baths, loose underwear, not cycling quite so much etc.

    Sorry for waffling on! :)
  • Oh, I forgot- we got some advice from one of the professors in the hospital today for the men. Basically he said that my husband should add in some extra supplements to his diet (which is generally pretty healthy). He said that vitamin C (with zinc preferably) and vitamin E are good for improving sperm count and quality as they're powerful antioxidants. Poor husband will be rattling soon! :)

I remember pineapple questions and found this...
Pineapple Juice...the pineapple thing is supposed to be because there's selenium in them, which helps with implantation. But it should be either very fresh juice or fresh pineapple, not concentrated juice or tinned chunks. Other food sources of selenium are sesame seeds, wheatgerm, and tuna, but you shouldn't eat too much tuna either because it might contain small amounts of mercury which is poisonous! It's all way too complicated.
