the study that was done suggested that once you had washed and dried them that it was no better (no idea how they worked that out)

That study was seriously flawed. It only took into account one baby using the nappies when in reality they are often shared among siblings and friends. (We're on the second baby and will pass them on when we're done.) They used a stupidly high washing temperature (90 degrees I think when 60 or 40 will do the job) and they also accounted for the energy used in IRONING them. I ask you. Who in their right mind irons nappies?!

And they compared (if I remember right) thousands (or at least hundreds) of disposable nappy users' experiences with only a handful of real nappy users'.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

The study was probably funded by companies making disposable nappies.

I have to admit to using disposables, because for various reasons there is no way I'd have coped with the extra washing from cloth ones, but there is absolutely no way I could reconcile that disposables and cloth have the same environmental impact.

It is how you present your argument that matters, I could argue that glass is cheaper to make than recycle, but that misses the point of how much it costs to put existing glass into landfill and how it impacts on future landfill space.

I was just in the local coop - next door to my house and my place of work. Anyway i went in and the supervisor on tonight was reducing the fresh baked bread down adn i said oh ill nicka few of them and she said well either bung them out the back or tell whoever is on the till to mark them down for you - landed as ive run out of bread. So i went up to the till with 2 bags of mini rolls, 1 bag of baguettes, 2 fresh loafs and a french stick - total 759 plus a few other reduced bits - doghnuts, ham, etc.(i love my job) anyway as i was stood at the till there was a guy in front of me who is a bit of a snob (pardon the expression) he drives round here in his ferarri etc, anyway my supervisor wheeled a trolley of fresh bread round (reduced) and left it by the till so people can see it - and said wow theres alot of bread today and the guy said 'oh dont worry all those to@@ers and their spawn in XXXXXXX (housing estate i live on) will buy it'. Then he looked at me with all my reduced stuff, turned his nose up and left. Ive never been anythign but nice ot this man and i really jsut felt liek a bit of dirt - i hope he chokes on his bagel. Sorry needed a rant - i hate people like that though - im trying to save a bit of money because me and bf dont have the biggest income in the world and yet my son is still cared for, loved, fed, clothed and supported and doesnt want for anything - not a spoilt little br@t.Sorry feel like muck today now
    Time to find me again

Only two big facts are known for certain: you are on a large, spinning rock hurtling through lonely space at about 67,000 mph, and one day your body is going to die. Will a new pair of shoes really help? :p

  • Hey, Sammy, let me tell you something you already know: people don't make remarks like that if they are secure and happy with themselves and who they are. People make remarks like that when they feel desperate to prove to the world that they are "better" than others. If he felt truly confident of his place in the world, and that he was as good as anyone else, he wouldn't have the need to put others down. So console yourself, there's a desperate, insecure man under all that ferarri. And probably a tiny winkle, too:rotfl:

Don't feel bad Sammy. It is him who has the problem, not you. You are being frugal, which may or may not be linked to being a bit hard up, but can also be linked to being environmentally friendly and avoiding waste. Look down your nose at him and his wasteful ways and bad attitude next time you see him.
  • You may be reading more into his comments than he meant. Does he know where you live? Did he know you were there? His look may not have been snooty, but Oh sh*t that nice lass with the baby had some reduced stuff and no doubt heard my comment look.

A psychologist I knew said once, you don't know what other people are thinking only what you are thinking.
  • Sammy many years ago I worked as a nanny in a very wealthy family. It was really easy to spot 'new money' and genuine aristos - the new money always felt that they had to put someone down in order to justify themselves the true landed gentry treated everyone the same, had fantastic manners, and also saved money on food etc wherever they could because they could not see the sense in waste. He was not showing he was above you but demonstrated just how far he is below you.

  • Ignore him - he must be a bit sad to make comments like that. Sounds like you got a great bargin - be proud of that and don't forget that all of us on here would be doing exactly the same thing as you! As a great believer in karma I am sure he will get what he deserves one day.
