Like lots of other people on this thread I swear by Tea tree oil. I always used to think Zovirax was spectacularly useless. Then I found that it works really well if you actually try and rub it into the cold sore - even though lips don't actaully absorb the cream.
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Don't kiss children and babies when you have a cold sore as it can cause other serious illness in them.

Once you get the herpes cold sore bug it's with you for life the doc tells me.

Any of the treatments have to be used at the very first tingle when the cold sore is coming or they don't work.

The other thing I've heard is that it helps to stop eating chocolate - because it is a good source of one of the other amino acids (not lysine) so upsets the balance.

sorry but that's just going too far for me!!

Dabbing perfume on to the cold sore in the early stages really works for me. I use to use Zovirax which worked pretty well but it was pricey for a very small tube. I dab the perfume on every few hours. I haven't had a full blown cold sore for years now. Just at that reddish sore stage, then with the perfume they go after a couple of days. Hope this helps for you.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

  • Having just contracted facial shingles for the first time, I am using neem cream on the spots which were itchy and sore and weeping. They are now dried up and I have suffered no itching or soreness. It may be worth giving it a try. recommended for chicken pox?? and maybe even eczema.

Years ago I read an article in the Daily Mail recommending Vectavir cream which is only available on prescription. Next time I went to the doctor I asked for some and she wrote a prescription for 2 tubes. They are the same size as Zovirax, so at 2 tubes for one charge, quite good value. I swear by this cream, both husband and myself get them every couple of months and this reduces the size of the cold sore. If you get the cream on in time it can stop it developing, if not, it heals it much quicker. Would not use anything else and can highly recommend this.

I suffer from a recurrent cold sore  .always in the same place and usually huge!I have tried most things. The ice cube is great at numbing the pain!I've never found Zovirax to work,i used to use coffee granules in a little water but for me nothing has worked.I might try t tree oil next time or TCP as they seem to work for some people.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is Lavender oil. A very good friend of mine saw me with a huge cold sore one year and handed me a bottle, you just put a dab on neat and it not only dried it up much faster but for the last two years I haven't had a cold sore at all when I used to get at least two a year.
Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

    F U Fund currently at £250
  • Has anyone tried taking the L- Lysine supplements?? If so does this work for you and how often do you take them??
  • I will have to try the Lavender Oil, and will let you all know if it works.
