Alison, I've had the tablets you metioned as well as quite a few other things, I just seem to have outbreaks and one thing will work once then it spreads the sores next time.

This is all thanks to an ex of mine, he was kind enough to give me the herpes virus, now I'm blighted for life.

Has anyone else seen or tried the laser treatment mentioned in this thread? Would be interested to have some feedback on it before I look into it more.
    Ta Ta!

I can vouch for LYSINE! I used to suffer from coldsores, and would get an outbreak at least twice a year, once in winter, and once in summer. I started taking lysine 2 years ago and have not had a single outbreak. I usually stop taking it for a month or so once I run out of tablets, and then re-start again after I re-stock on my vitamins and minerals. I go for the minimal dosage available, and take one every second day. I have not heard of or experienced any adverse side-effects!

Lysine is also supposed to be good once you get an outbreak of coldsores as it cuts the severity of it and the healing time! You are supposed to take the max dosage for this. I haven't tried it myself,as I haven't had a chance - I can hardly remember what a cold sore looks like!
  • Unfortunately if you have oral herpes it cant be cured, and when it is not hanging around the mouth it is quietly napping in the nerves near your brain stem.
Here are some remedies which may help. :)
During an outbreak try eating more foods which contain Lysine, they include turkey, riccotta cheese, advacado, eggs and chocolate. (so it's not ALL bad ;D )
If you are prone to outbreaks, foods to avoid would include almonds, cashews, peanuts, walnuts; sunflower and sesame seeds; pork, milk and cheese as they all contain ARGININE a must to avoid.
Eating live yogurt containing ACIDOPHILUS is good as a preventative measure and also speeds healing during an outbreak. If you can't face 2 cups of yogurt daily Acidophilus tablets are available in good health shops.
I would also avoid toothpaste that contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate which I believe is the foaming agent ( and seems to be in all toothpastes that the supermarkets sell) during an outbreak as it can make the outbreak last longer. Try out an S.L.S. free toothpaste from the health shop,,,(unless of course someone out there has a better idea??)
Try an ice cube wrapped in a napkin when the tingle starts, hold it in place for as long as is comfortable, take a break then re-apply. Keep it on your skin for 15 to 30 minutes. As viruses dont do well in a cold environment the ice can stop the blisters from forming.
Always use a high protection lip balm when outdoors if the sun starts an outbreak, and LEMON BALM is particularly soothing to cold sores. Buy at a health shop and apply as often as needed during an outbreak.
For those with chronic coldsore problems :-[ talk to your doctor about preventing outbreaks with LYSINE it is an effective virus blocker.
The herb ASTAGALUS boosts the immune system and kills viruses, CALCIUM and MAGNESIUM helps keep the bodys pH levels akaline a necessary step in preventing cold sores, ZINC builds the immune system, BETA-CAROTENE strengthens the mucous membranes of the mouth, VITAMIN E also builds immunity and the integrity of the epithelium while VITAMIN C WITH BIOFLAVONOIDS is for healing and prevention , and increasing ones general vitamin c levels is particularly good for smokers as smokers lose vitamin c quicker than non-smokers. All of these suppliments can be purchased in good health shops and are also to be found in a wide variety of foods.

When I was younger I used to get a lot of cold sores :-[
My dear old Grampy was our family "doctor"(he was a first aider but was full of wonderful advice) and he advised me to place an ice cube on the sore as soon as you felt it tingling. keep on doing this for about 15 mins.
Then use perfume on the sore(anyone will do) or T.C.P. Once the sore started to dry use vaseline.
Have to say it always worked. If I couldn't manage to use ice cubes initially I knew the cold sore would be much larger than usual.
    Horrible things!

I get a cold sore about 6 or 7 times a year always in exactly the same place and luckily it has never spread. I use zovirax but might give ice a go now.

I get them, when the sun is out, when stressed or over tired.

I also know where i got mine from by some nasty manky person at a wedding going around kissing everyone with a coldsore >:( but we couldnt see it so noone knew 3 people now have cold sores because of him. Do you think we could sue ;D

I know it's a bit of an old topic, but you can get Zovirax on prescription. I must have spent hundreds at the chemist before a mate told me. But you have to ask - they won't be forthcoming about it! Big tube, for the standard prescription charge. Oh and the virulite laser thingy works wonders.

My MIL buys me Zovirax in Goa. It's about 50p per tube.
I heard recently that lemon balm is pretty good for getting rid of them too, & as I have a massive lemon balm bush in my garden I will try it next time one pops up (that's definately tempted fate - one will have sprung up by tea time!).
