Smart phone for a user who never phones.

edit: Decided you really aren't worth my time. I've decided you really aren't worth my time (just so the OCD doesn't kick in again). That makes little sense; what are you talking about? I am trying to help the OP.
Calm down fellow posters , have enough trouble with two daughters squabbling .
Yes I know , I said , I that I would not use the smart phone as a phone, but as it will replace the emergency phone lying neglected in the glove box .......... I lied.0 -
I'm a windows phone fan so I may be a little biased. The Nokia Lumia 710 is on special with Carphone Warehouse for under £100. Nokia Maps is free and one of the best free sat navs on a phone. As it runs on live tiles you can choose what you want on the home screen and ignore the rest of the apps. Its also got 8gb storage on there which cheap android phones do not. It takes a few days to get used to but well worth it once you know what you're doing.0

Have got an old PAYG phone , stuck it into glove box for emergence's but kids have now said ........ Dad needs a smart phone. So I would like some advice .
1st please keep it simple ( any advice and also the phone')
Will still need to be PAYG as I have not got into the habit communicating!
Price ...... would object in paying more than £100 just to keep the kids happy.
I think a camera comes as standard ?? but very happy with the basic .
Don't ( to be honest cant ) text , so its got to be a proper keyboard , one which wont second guess my typing. But could be a digital ?keyboard.
Will be used to check my emails . but only where I can find free wi fi ( golf club/ home)
Sat Nav ? would be nice.
Not interested in speed or the latest models
Am I asking too much ??
Ps be as rude as you like about my wishes .. the kids have got there first.
Based on these points from your post:- Will still need to be PAYG as I have not got into the habit communicating!

- Not interested in speed or the latest models
If its just kept in the glovebox for emergencies, stick with your very basic pay and go jobbie. No point spending money on something that you can't and probably won't use
All just my opinion

Would find the ability to check my emails useful , could spend more time on the golf course , but be contactable.
Do I want one? ( phone not daughter) debatable, but everyone else seem to depend on them , am I missing something.
And if its less than £100 , cheaper than filling the car up.0 -
am I missing something
This was precisely my first thought, then I got to thinking that having kids who can show him how to work the thing, this might open up a whole new world for him, what with that myriad of free apps available. I suspect he doesn't realize its potential; this phone is capable of streaming BBC iplayer for example, so he could catch up on TV using free wi-fi or even watch it live.Based on these points from your post:- Will still need to be PAYG as I have not got into the habit communicating!

Sorry, I read the HUKD post the previous day and made that post from memory. I couldn't remember the exact figures, but I did recall that the author hadn't updated this in their edit: "A bargain phone for £..." I must have forgotten about the first edit and presumed you had quoted the unedited amount. That's no excuse though, I admit it was a sloppy offering.MillicentBystander wrote: »Nope, the £67 is based on the new rate of 6% cashback. I got the phone for £63 due to the cashback rate being 10% at the time. It's simple, really.
£102.95 delivered. £30 discount/refund reduces it to £72.95 then the 6% cashback reduces it by a further £5.94. Net cost = £67.01. A no-brainer, basically. What may have confused you is the OP on HUKD has edited his thread to reflect the reduced cashback rate. It originally stated the net price as £63.05.
Actually I've spent a couple of hours on review sites such as http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/mobile-phones/huawei-ascend-g300-review-50007180/ , and I'm so impressed I'm going to go for it. It'll be a big leap from my previous smartphone, a 2006 MDA Vario with a 195 MHz processor!0 -
Have you daughters

Thankfully not
I was just thinking while reading your first post for the first time, especially as people were recommending all sorts of phones, "This is money saving expert not money spending expert"
But Kernal Sanders point above is a valid one, and like you say, for less a tank of fuel, you can have a very decent phone, which you might use even more than you think, so it might be worth a try! Just don't get tied into any silly contracts and good luck!

So my PAYG will in practice cost me £30 a month just to have the phone on ?? ( just to check my emails , at a free wi fi area)
Ps did warn you I was not up on a mobile.
If you only turn the phone on in a free wifi area, and only use free wifi no you should not have to pay for data.
However use the phone anywhere there is no free wifi, or of if the phone fetches data before it's connected to the wifi and yes it will be £1 a day.0 -
Not if he invests a one-off £5 in this he won't https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3981617However use the phone anywhere there is no free wifi, or of if the phone fetches data before it's connected to the wifi and yes it will be £1 a day.
No phone unlocking required either.0 -

HeHe, I should be on commission
I genuinely don't think you will be disappointed for £67, this phone is an absolute bargain at £100!
PS talking of review site reviews, techradar were so impressed they awarded it 8th place in their current list of best android phones to buy!
