Smart phone for a user who never phones.
Have got an old PAYG phone , stuck it into glove box for emergence's but kids have now said ........ Dad needs a smart phone. So I would like some advice .
1st please keep it simple ( any advice and also the phone')
Will still need to be PAYG as I have not got into the habit communicating!
Price ...... would object in paying more than £100 just to keep the kids happy.
I think a camera comes as standard ?? but very happy with the basic .
Don't ( to be honest cant ) text , so its got to be a proper keyboard , one which wont second guess my typing. But could be a digital ?keyboard.
Will be used to check my emails . but only where I can find free wi fi ( golf club/ home)
Sat Nav ? would be nice.
Not interested in speed or the latest models
Am I asking too much ??
Ps be as rude as you like about my wishes .. the kids have got there first.

G300 will do everything you need, including maps and satnav.
Ovivo New Network. 200 minutes 200 Texts Free indefinitely. (500Mb of internet is free too - this will suit your needs).

I'd try one of the Orange Android models, such as San Francisco or Monte Carlo. Great phones for the price. Failing that, a Huawei Ascend G300 or a Samsung Galaxy Ace.THE BIGGEST_MINT0

All Smartphones use data in the background. Even if you only want to use it for data where there is Wifi every time you turn it on it will use data. You can bork the phone so it does not connect but then if you want to connect anywhere else you'll have to rejig it.
Data prices vary but generally the networks currently charge a set amount per day for so much data, for example Vodafone charge £1 for up to 25MB, even if you use 1 byte a day you still pay the £1.
My advice would be to tell the kids that if they want you to have one they can set up a contract or fund the phone. you probalby pay very little for the PAYG phone and a smartphone will cost more to run.0 -
It might be worth you looking at the Carphone Warehouse website or mobiles.co.uk (part of CPW) and getting a deal on something like the Samsung Galaxy Ace.
I was like you with an old PAYG phone which a few months ago needed replacing. I was dead against contracts as I consider myself a light user. However if you go onto a contract with talkmobile (part of CPW/TalkTalk group) you can get 24 month contracts from £7.50 per month and they include a free phone such as the Galaxy Ace ( a smartphone - not unlike the Iphone). So 24x£7.50=£180. To buy the phone alone would cost around £130 plus your PAYG call charges.
I have been very impressed with the features of the new phone...calls/texts/e-mail/internet/satnav/apps etc etc and now wonder how I ever managed without one. I ended up getting another 2 Aces on 2 more contracts for my kids.
By the way my £7.50 per month gets me 250 minutes talk time any network, 5000 texts and half a gig of internet use. More than enough for a light user like myself. Also Talkmobile uses the Vodaphone mobile network so coverage is pretty good.
Hope this helps!0 -

This. Thread closer imo. The perfect solution.0 -

So my PAYG will in practice cost me £30 a month just to have the phone on ?? ( just to check my emails , at a free wi fi area)

And that would allow me to check ( reply) to emails etc
AND NO FURTHER COST ??? ........kids say I am tight fisted0 -

Do you mean Ovivo? AFAIK, no catches.

200 min, 200sms , 512 Mb per month for £5 one off, then £0 per month! sponsored by ads Ovivo Mobile0 -
Ok just read the suggested thread
Thinking just order the www.ovivomobile.com sim card today ?? its a £5 !
then worry about a phone ............. YES???????0 -
Havent looked into ovivo.. so cant comment on if its cheaper than what I use.
But I huse giffgaff. I pay £10 a month for 250 mins, unlimited wed and unlimited texts.
As my phone downloads things in the background like most.
I use a HTC wildfire s which I got second hand for under £100.
Also.. if you do not want free mins as you do not make phone calls.. then giffgaff may even have a cheaper tarriff?
Btw giffgaff is payg not contract.0
