    Ah, spiders.

When I see a spider, my brain goes into rhapsodies about the important role played by spiders, in keeping down Mosquitos, gnats, fruit flies, silverfish and other lovelies. It observes how harmless the indigenous British spider is - particularly in comparison with its arachnid cousins around the world.

The rest of my body screams "SPIDER!!!! SPIDER!!!"

    and tries to run away.

    In different directions. Simultaneously.

This produces co-ordination problems which are not conducive to 'thundering' anywhere.

That said, 'Spider Grim Reaper' may be an appropriate epithet. As I tentatively wave the flip-flop of potential death in the general direction of the eight-legged intruder.

We live in a very old house. Plenty of warped floorboards, exposed beams, and spiders.

Over the years, I learned to loved them - even the really big house spiders we can actually hear running across the walls. We've also plenty of Pholcus spiders; they eat other spiders.

Our girls keep a watch on the Pholcus webs, wanting to see what they've eaten.

This summer we kept a room full of plants in which to raise painted lady butterflies from caterpillars. If I can get used to sitting in a room where overly colourful moths land on me, anyone can love their spiders!

    I know this feeling well.

It's all very well for people (including my husband) so say 'it's only a spider' 'it's more afraid of you' 'it gets rid of flies' etc but for people who have a true phobia this is no help whatsoever and only serves to make someone embarrassed and ashamed of something they just can't help.

I know September (aka Spider month) is coming up and I'm dreading it. Walking into the rooms, scanning the walls and then the mini heart attack when I spot a big 'un. When they are so big you need a flipping vase to trap one then that's just TOO big

I bought one of those plug in repellers which was flipping useless so this year I will try the conkers and spray. I don't like killing them and would rather they just didn't show up instead

Eww...just went to buy the spray on the amazon link...did they HAVE to put a spider picture on the bottle? That's not helpful :rotfl: I'm going to have to rip that off when it arrives :o

I'm guessing it's a clue so it isn't mistaken for hairspray.

I'm guessing anyone who buys it knows what it is already...and hairspray is rarely sold in a spray bottle:rotfl:

Not bothered at all by spiders, I live in a high rise flat so rarely get them, before we left to go on hols in June, I did discover one in the bathroom and it was fairly ugly and bigger than any spider I've seen before

Sadly, it didn't last much longer after that picture as the kitten spied it and maimed it :( Though I can't really put them in jars and let them out the window as I live 8 floors up.
  • Cat has done two small spiders and a silvery moth this evening. He's too quick to rescue them.

Excuse me, I just have to go and see what he's up to now.

Just retrieving his legs from the blinds. Nothing to see here.

But I bet there's a spider laughing all eight of its socks off at the sight.

having come back from a weekend away to the cat food wriggling with maggots because there had been a fly in the house I know what I'd rather have!

Our cat doesn't chase flies, so it'll have to be left to the spiders to do it.

If there was a huge one on the bedroom roof as I went off to sleep I'd have to move it outside, but otherwise I leave them be. I admit to lifting my feet if there's one running over the living room floor, but that's just the reaction to the way they walk.
