I was chatting with some of the guys at work the other day and we found a huge variation between what we all pay despite living within a few miles of each other. Just how is your water bill calculated?0

Just a quick question for people out there. I have reason to believe that im being ripped off for my water supply..... so im just looking to see what others are paying monthly for their supply.
Our current bill is £432 per annum (or £36 per calendar month) based upon Anglian Water's "budget plan".
To put it in perspective, a look at the AW's "ready reckoner" shows that we are paying more than an average use family with 4 occupants. The total given by this average 4 person family is £420 per year.
It is just 2 of us living in a 1 bedroom flat with a metered water supply. I just checked to see what our past two months usage is (taking AW's reading from the end of January as a point of reference), and it equaled 23 cubic metres for the 2 months.
We dont have a dishwasher, we have a mixture of baths and showers, and are sensible about our washing machine usage. We dont use a hosepipe as we dont have a garden.... any car washing is normaly in a trip to the local jet-wash. We have had bills in the region of £30 + since we have lived here (8 years)
Will be interesting to see peoples thoughts on this.0 -

If you don't have a water meter your water company bases it charges on the rateable value of your property. All properties built before 1st April 1990 were given a rateable value by the Inland Revenue based on their size and value.0 -
i pay south west water £60.00 a month,this probably needs to go up
just had new bill for the year £814.00
this is so steep,i cant have water meter fitted as theres 5 people in the 3 bed house,it cripples us as we are unemployed at the moment to :mad:
I would look into it. There are 5 of us in our house - myself, the better half, and 3 kids under 4. The kids have a bath every day, and we both have showers. Dishwasher is on every day, and the washing machine twice most days as we use "proper" nappies for our youngest. My partner and the kids are home during the week to some extent, and they ofetn have friends with other kids around so it can be busy here with lots of toilet flushing etc. Wash our cars every few weeks with a hose, and water the garden in the summer, although do have a water butt which helps.
We pay wessex water £35 a month which looks to be a little high as we are getting further into credit, so I am sure you would save with a meter if you are currently paying that much.0 -
Just looked to check the actual breakdown of our use for the past 6 months. It appears that our sewerage charge is a lot higer than our water usage charge
water = vol used 76m3 @106.46p (80.90)
standing charge = 189 days @ 6.58p (12.42)
total = 93.32
sewerage service
vol used (foul and surface) = 68.40m3 @ 118.42 (80.99)
standing charge = 189 days @ 16.99 (32.10)
total = 113.09
so thats a six month bill of £206.41 for which we are paying £36 a month on the budget plan0 -
I pay £45 per month to Welsh Water. We are not on a meter so it's based on the old rateable value of our house.

I pay about £9 per month and I am not on a meter, but I don't have mains waste and from what I can tell, that's where the main cost of the water bills go.0
