Am back at school now and find myself shopping a bit more regularly as I try to get to grips with volumes of term-time milk and sandwich fillings that we go through. Would rather have to pick up some extra bits than end up throwing out half packs of things, IYKWIM.

Need to add up my receipts this evening...

the term granny and eggs comes to mind so forgive me if you do this already
BUT sandwich stuff ... do you make up your own

    tuna/mayo/sweetcorn ,egg/ mayo ect ?

    And

left over sunday roast meats on the butties ?

  • Well no spends today or yesterday. Actually we had a takeaway pizza last night but different budget :o OH is deep in the throes of preparing for a job interview and I've been helping him so we've been busy in the evenings. Really hoping he gets it as he's miserable at work and it's a massive step up pay wise which will help. He used to make around a third of his income from overtime which he doesn't do much of any more  so he's completely skint. We do have mostly separate finances except a bills account but obviously one of us being skint still ends up affecting the other as I wouldn't see him go without!

Making spag bol tonight stretched out with lots of veg. Meals might get a bit weird for the next few days as we're on holiday from next Thursday so want to use up the stuff in the fridge.

Monthly shopping now stands at £78-78 so far so good. Will need some veg at the weekend and some lambs liver. Finally managed to get hold of some tinned tomatoes 4 for £1 from B&M. They seem to sell very quickly at our local store so grabbed 8 today while they had them. :j
Gone really cold here today and can see heating going on before long. :o

  • Making multi-bean chilli for the gang tomorrow evening - managed to get myself sorted enough to soak beans last night and got them all cooked today, which has saved me a tidy sum. Added up my receipts and was pleasantly surprised to boot!
Still too much stuff making its way into the freezers though, and I need to get them as empty as possible in the next 2 weeks. I forsee some "interesting" dinner combinations ahead :D

    Hi!
Another nsd here, except swimming, but I took the tots a banana each and some water so no sneaky cafe snacks. We came home and I did them a little picnic.

  • Spent £6.57 on bread, 6 Pinter of milk, white vinegar & 2x bicarb (going to attempt to make my own cleaning products!), 2x glasses (as mine got stuck together after washing them) fabric softener and 3x longlife milk (for emergencies when we run out of milk).

£106.70 so far. Budget £150 for sept.
  • just a tiny 19p on YS coleslaw to have with dinner - yum!
  • You can eat leftover rice within 24 hours but it must be thoroughly reheated. Think about it: fried rice is recooked. You can also freeze rice. But as a single person you might find it easier to avoid leftovers by making a single portion of normal long grain/basmati rice than using a packet of ready cooked stuff. HTH.

Like meat and lots of other foods, rice is perfectly ok reheated as long as its heated thoroughly. More dangerous is leaving cooked rice to sit around at room temp, it needs to be cooled quickly and in the fridge (obviously that also applies to meat etc)

katholicos, I've added your Vegetarian Burger recipe to the index  (also added to my recipe folder, they sound lush! :D

Erm I'm not sure I'd do that. Cooked rice has toxins in it that increase and can't be killed by cooking. But you're clearly still alive and kicking so each to their own and all that jazz. :D I recook rice to turn it in to egg fried rice but I wouldn't leave it more than a day or two. :) DH won't eat left over egg fried rice for the takeaway the next day, mainly because he doesn't know it's history which makes sense.

I did read somewhere that some people rinse their cooked rice in cold water to cool it quickly and then freeze it in batches which can easily be defrosted. That's probably quite a safe way to do it if you have cooked extra rice that you want to reuse at some point . :)

This is correct - the bacteria that sometimes grows in cooked rice (bacillus cereus) produce toxins that will make you ill whether you reheat the rice or not. The bacteria doesn't always get into the rice though (this is why it's best to cool it straightaway and freeze it to minimise contamination) so loads of people I know reheat rice and have been fine for years. I, however, after studying microbiology will never again eat leftover rice :rotfl: but that's just me! I always just cook what I need.
