Exactly, lostinrates, what works for you. He/she admitted to diets not working long term, well we know what works for us! Every body is different, so lets stick with what is working for us:T
And adouglasmhor, just ignore them and they will go away:j
Going to check out some of RichardD1970's recipes, for my next starvation day, yippee:D0 -
This is getting tedious now with the trolls. This thread has completely lost focus because one person couldn't let people do what they want, and do something that's working for them, without trying to tarnish it and argue against proven facts.
How sad and empty does a person's life have to be to come on to a thread like this and tell people that something they're doing, enjoying, and doing well, is completely wrong? Pathetic.0 -

:rotfl::rotfl:
I think that people who really know and understand a lot about metabolism are the first to admit how complex it is and how there are a lot of unknowns and that in many areas we are only scratching the surface.
Obviously this doesn't apply to mrUnhelpful.
I mean reading his posts, I am becoming more and more surprised that humans are still alive.my mother cooks her vegetables to one inch of their life, and always has, and yet, she is an astonishingly healthy 83 years old.I lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0 -

Pauline. Your first line is partially correct but a body in starvation mode will hang on to as much fat as possible and have a go at protein. Of course if you starve yourself you will lose weight but do you want to be like a POW in the jap camps and do you know what happened when the survivors were released.
Georgiegirl. I dont have a diet as such because time and time again they dont work long time. I lost 4 inches off my waist by eating more organic stuff and strangely i lost the craving for nutritionally dead calories. The nearest thing to what I advise is teh Jon Gabriel method you can google it if you like but I am in no way connected to him and receive no payment for recommending his approach. It is just a way of eating that actually makes sense.
But what is starvation mode? It will vary from person to person.
Also, people who do truly starve themselves can end up anorexic and extremely underweight. Its not the case that the body will hang on to every ounce of fat, some people are capable of getting their bodyweight down to half of what it should be, by starving.
So many issues when it comes to dieting. People overestimate exercise calories burned, underestimate food calories taken in.
I wouldnt expect someone, unless they were very well read or had a nutrition qualification to be able to rhyme off just what their dinner contained in the way of vitamins and minerals.
I stand by the point I made, reduce your calories and your body will use its fat stores as energy, why do we lose weight in the first place when we have excess pounds to lose but eat less than we should be eating on a daily basis.
Me cutting calories by 500 a day or so isnt going to put my body into starvation mode as far as Im concerned. But I'll still lose weight.
There are so many diets out there, high protein, high carb, or a mix of carb days, protein says, atkins, dukan, lighter life, cambridge, calorie counting.
People need to find a diet that works for them, thats achievable and sustainable and that they can do long term without feeling deprived.
So much of peoples weight struggles have nothing to do with their diet anyway, its about confidence, self esteem, self loathing, the psychology of why people overeat if you like.
Anyone can cut calories and lose weight but if people dont understand their triggers they'll put weight back on. Im a fitness instructor and Im a qualified addiction worker as well. Ive also had my own battles with food for most of my adult life, which I wont go into here.
If the 5:2 works for some people, great, if not, they'll find something else that hopefully works for them.0 -

Fast day. I tend to time them with my shift patterns (when I know I'm busy) but I'm going to bite the bullet next week and switch to Monday and Thursday and stick to that to see how I go. I find I don't binge the days after my fasts but if I do a Monday and Wednesday say, then by the weekend I get a bit bingey! It's very tough but instead of concentrating on calories and weight loss I'm trying to focus long term and on health. Which for me means not bingeing on rubbish. I don't think vitamins are coming into the equation atm. Trying to get a healthy relationship with food and the fasts really help with putting myself back in touch with when I'm hungry and how often I eat for any other reason but hunger.
Also I find with attention seekers they're best ignored. Works wonders with my spotty teenagers. I'm just saying!
Good luck everyone fasting today and I love all the recipes and before and after photo's. For the first time in too many long and wasted years, I feel positive. My skin is definitely clearer, I'm sleeping better and on the morning of a fast day I feel I can kick a**.DEBT LBM-3.10.2011Total debt-6800  09.09.13-zero

I'll have to make sure I'm busy and out of the kitchen!I lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0 -
Fast day today, obviously as I am starving myself to death I will not be able to put my skeletal form through a full days work, and am only doing an express (45min) Body Combat™ class tonight before my miserly evening meal of baked haddock, large sweet potato oven chips and peas. Possibly with an alchohol free wheat beer on the side. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Havn't been posting for a while, because couldn't be asked to discuss points with the troll.... but have to say I do believe everyone is responsible for themselves.... if the thought of 5:2 makes someone so negative, unhelpful and almost phobic then it is obviously not for them.
For me it has been enlightening and a positive experience, yes 500 calories did seem a bit tough at the beginning but now it's days I look forward to. I eat well with lots of veg and 100g of protein (usually chicken or fish) in one meal.
I do not over eat on non fast days, swim for at least 30 mins, four times a week and have lost a whole 14 lbs in 10 weeks, still got 5lbs to go but in no hurry. the weight loss wasn't predictable, sometimes 1lb, other weeks 2lb but did feel better in myself overall.
Most importantly its adaptable, fits in with my lifestyle and I like it.
It suits me fine, has expanded my knowledge of food content and my relationship with it... so its all good from my point of view.
Can we get this thread back on track as I really like to read the positive or negative feedback but only from those who have actual experience of the 5:2 way of eating.
Thanks also to all the regular posters who have inspired/kept me on track when I needed some support.:o0
