    I've been Money Tipped!
can I ask, as I think this diet is harmful and stupid
jeez... Is there an infestation of arrogant and uneducated folks at the mo?(
why not just eat a balance diet 7 days a week)
on the 2 days where you eat around 600 calories, do you not feel hungry? how do you cope?

    why not?
Because it doesn't induce the metabolic changes that make the diet work.
Read the 100s of accounts on here; most people cope very well, a few find it's not for them.

Much of these so called metabolic changes are not all they are cracked up to be or poorly researched There are many articles out there and this one doesnt seem to biased

Oh yes... 'Not biased' but advertising protein supplements on the side.. And guess what is the recommended diet? High protein.
    You couldn't make it up.

Focus entirely n possible problems that so far I haven't read in anybody following the diet's posts.

If that's your view of scientific unbiased data, frankly, I
prefer my own sources and the many individual stories on this thread. Starting with my own.

of course you need protein daily if you want to lose fat. You have to replenish what gets used over night for starters. There are loads of articles there though

As gfor checking facts you might notice more posts claiming results on the weight watchers threads or the slimming world ones. fact with most established diets you lose weight for a time and then you tend to slow up. Some people then try harder and harder while others give up. A few posts back rosyq said she put on 2kg in a week on holiday. that is roughly equivalent in fat terms to eating twice your daily recommended amount of calories every day of her hols. I dont think so do you?
Food gives us 2 things calories and nutrients. Anyone spot the snag with this? most supermarket food by the time it gets to your gut has been stripped of nutrients or has corrupted proteins fats etc which the body can do nothing with apart from strip out some calories and save them. This means fasting will make things worse. If you want to burn fat try elevating your leptin response which you dont do by fasting.
You say when you get to target (more like if but never mind) yopu will go 6 to 1 so why not go sevven days eating slightly smaller portions. Could you explain why this wouldnt work.
As I said somewhere before are you losing fat or something else. Maybe you should check your facts about nutrition.

Are you really asking why the threads for WW & SW have more posts claiming results than this one? Would that not have something to do with the fact that those two diets have been around for decades whereas the idea of 5:2 has only been in the mainstream for less than a year, ergo there are far less people on this than on the other two?

As for eating twice your recommended calorie intake everyday for a week, I think you'll find it's perfectly doable. Have a gander on 4OD and watch a programme called 'Secret Eaters'. You'll see plenty of people who manage to eat twice, and sometimes more, than their RDA.

As for the bit about supermarket food, don't talk rot. It's what you eat and how you prepare food that dictates how much nutrients you take in. We buy most of our food from the supermarket and I've still managed to lose 2 stone so it can't be doing me too much damage.

Again, regarding losing fat. That is precisely what I've lost. I know this as I've had two body compositions done by my dietician. She measured things such as body fat % and muscle mass, among others. My muscle mass was exactly what it should be and on the second occasion, as I've already stated, there was a considerable drop in body fat %.

You're arguing in the face of science without having first hand experience. At least go and try it for a week and then come back and try telling us it's all rot, in spite of what people here have put.

As for trying smaller portions, I don't eat huge portions as it is. I generally eat healthily on my non-fast days but with this I know I can have the odd treat here and there it have little effect on my weight. I tried a calorie controlled diet once before and it didn't last. This works for me. What's so wrong with that? What do you and the other trolls have against somebody doing something that works well for them? I've been on this since the end of Feb, bar a couple of weeks in June, and I'm perfectly fit and healthy. If this way of eating was such a terrible way to lose weight, it's had plenty of chance to prove it before now.

And I'll put to you what I put to most people who doubt this way of eating. If fasting is such an awful thing to do, why on earth have Muslims been fasting for god knows how many decades/centuries during Ramadan?

Again, if it was harmful and stupid, there'd be plenty of people out there feeling the effects by now having been doing it for a number of months.

And again, read the thread, or at least part of it, and you'll find plenty of posts where people explain that other ways of 'dieting' just don't work for them whereas this does.

Really I am struggling to understand why people can't just let others get on with their choices in life without finding a way to drag them down.

Also, go and watch the original Horizon programme and find out about the science behind it. It's on the net to watch.

Mr unhelpful, you seem to have some really garbled ideas about weight loss and diet. None of it seems to make sense.

The 5:2 method of eating was devised and researched by scientists. It was found to have many benefits one of which is weight loss.

Personally, I have tried calorie counting diets and I don't like them because a) I have never been able to lose a pound of weight on them and b) these diets are unsustainable and there is always an associated binge with them.

The 5:2 is flexible, sustainable and it works. Many people are healthier and thinner today because of it. No amount of scientific gobbedy gook can change that. The 5:2 also brings you back into touch with the food you eat, and with your true hunger.

If you don't like the 5:2 eating plan then just go to Weightwatchers if it works for you. I'm sure nobody on here would mind.

Harmful? - well I am on the 5:2 and no longer suffer from arthritis pain in my joints or acid reflux. I am down in weight by over a stone and have lost the fat round my waist. I have more energy and don't eat between meals.

Stupid? I would have been stupid to carry on overeating. A balanced diet is all very well but we are not perfect beings and we love to eat. The 5:2 helps you to get back to a balanced diet.

Well I'm happy to say that after getting back on the wagon and fasting yesterday, I've just weighed myself and I'm only 0.3kg above my pre-holiday weight. So I guess the 2kg gain was due to bloating? Too many coffees on the journey home? Weighed in the evening instead of the usual morning?

I've been enjoying this thread and it's been helpful but I'm sad it's been taken over by a couple of trolls (I thought berbastrike had gone but no, they're back :( )
It's a pity because its not helpful.

Nobody eating a balanced diet needs protein supplements.
A woman needs only 60-80 g per day and most people consume far more than they need.
Interestingly, the article on IF in the new scientist a few months ago was showing some interesting link between excess protein consumption and the classic degenerative illnesses.

Don't fret over the troll rosy; the strength of their argument, the level of their knowledge and general eloquence makes them easy to dismiss!
