and maybe you want to take your baseless and unwanted opinions somewhere else?
You obviously know nothing about the metabolic changes hat occur with intermittent fasting, yet feel qualified to pontificate out of the subject.
We're a friendly bunch on this thread, but I'll make an exception for once and ask you politely to p1ss off unless you can contribute to the 5:2 diet.
Thanks in advance.:pI like to give people as many choices as possible to do what I want them to. (Milton H Erickson I think)0 -
Mr_helpful wrote: »Perhaps you should explain these so called metabolic changes .After all forums are supposed to help people understand things. What could one start with? maybe how hasting helps essential omega 3 assimilation or even calcium assimilation both of which tend to be is short supply in our bodies yet essential for weight loss.
I'm sure you can find them and read them for yourself.
The main point is that the body switches into 'repair' mode through a reduction of IGF1 a growth hormone ( well, insulin like growth factor).
The result of several months on the diet is that my fasting blood sugar is significantly lower than it had been for year, which, I believe indicates that my insulin sensitivity has been increased.
I have never ever read that calcium or omega 3 we essential for weight loss. I'm interested. Care to document these?I lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0 -
There are many many posts explaining them along this thread.

There is a bit about calcium in there too or you could read"calcium intake and adiposity" in american journal of clinical nutrition 77. no2 (february 2003): 281-287.
That should take up most of your fasting day but Im sure I can find moreI like to give people as many choices as possible to do what I want them to. (Milton H Erickson I think)0 -

Maybe you could extend the same courtse and inform yourself on how IF equally increases insulin sensitivity.
Contrary to your apparent belief, I don't spend my fasting days glued to a screen, barely able to move.I've actually gone to metafit this morning and managed perfectly well, although the heat made the class harder than usual.

As far as I am concerned you can talk science till the cows come home, I like the results, as i am no longer in the obese category and feel healthier than I have been for quite a while.
I don't find the low cal fast days much of a problem, maybe its not the diet for you Mr UnhelpfulFollowing horizon 5-2 started 28/01/13 target where I am now ish

[QUOTE=Mr helpful;62438859)
You say when you get to target (more like if but never mind) yopu will go 6 to 1 so why not go sevven days eating slightly smaller portions. Could you explain why this wouldnt work.
[/QUOTE]
Because very few people want to spend every day watching what they eat and thinking 'I shouldn't have that'. That's why, ultimately, most weight loss diets fail. What this way of eating has done for me - apart from enabling me to lose the final 10 lbs I've been struggling to shift for about 5 years - is to allow me to feel 'normal' around food. I'm comfortably wearing size 10 skinny jeans and there aren't too many almost 60 year old's who can say that. I feel good in clothes.
If I go out or have people here to eat, I have whatever I want, and don't feel guilty as I would have done before. Because I'm free to eat 'naughty' foodstuff, in the main I don't whereas previously I'd want to rebel against the rules and have it 'just this once'.
It's worked for me, I feel confident that I can manage my weight and keep it stable without any effort or the rest of my life and it's a great feeling.
There is no single diet that works for everyone but this one has worked for me. Open your mind and accept that we're all different. 5:2 isn't for you, that's all.0 -

Some people then try harder and harder while others give up. A few posts back rosyq said she put on 2kg in a week on holiday. that is roughly equivalent in fat terms to eating twice your daily recommended amount of calories every day of her hols. I dont think so do you?
Actually I probably did eat twice as much as I normally do
I was on holiday in a walker's paradise where the food & portions are aimed at people who've been out on the fells all day, and it was deliciousAdd ice creams etc and there you go.
BUT I'm back on a 500 cal day today, enjoying it and feeling great, and had a nice bit of salmon for dinner so your other comment about missing out on omega 3 is covered too.
It may seem hard to believe that cutting calories for 2 days a week can have such a huge effect but all the evidence points to that being the case. Given that fasting isn't as hard as we're all led to believe, maybe it all just seems too easy?
Yes we can fall off the wagon and put on a few lbs but it soon goes and is just a blip in a steady downward trend. And there's no guilt.
Cheers all

I tried my first fast day today. I managed 800 calories, I caved in to a slice of bread, normally I don't ave bread in either! However I did do 20 mins swimming to counter at least some of the bread.
I did need a snooze about 6 pm and felt much better and less hungry.
It is still probably 1200 calories less than I would have eaten.0 -
can I ask, as I think this diet is harmful and stupid (why not just eat a balance diet 7 days a week)
on the 2 days where you eat around 600 calories, do you not feel hungry? how do you cope? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

On what basis do you feel that the fast diet is harmful and stupid ?
On the 2 days you find that the hunger isn't constant, and if you choose well you will find that 600 calories can be quite filling.Following horizon 5-2 started 28/01/13 target where I am now ish
