5:2 diet

Nobody eating a balanced diet needs protein supplements.
A woman needs only 60-80 g per day and most people consume far more than they need.
Interestingly, the article on IF in the new scientist a few months ago was showing some interesting link between excess protein consumption and the classic degenerative illnesses.
Don't fret over the troll rosy; the strength of their argument, the level of their knowledge and general eloquence makes them easy to dismiss!
Quite a bit of the research comes back to protein excess being a bit of a poor dietary choice. One of the things I raised early on in the thread when I was more active and in fact felt a bit shouted down..
There is no doubt that protein is valuable and important, especially for those doing particular types of exercise and training. ( I am in no way a nutritionist about have studied some basic animal nutrition as part of my undergrad degree so understand the basic theories if not the finesse of feeding for different performances and health profiles).
The thing about feeling hungry of we don't eat three meals away everyday is difficult for me to answer. Because of my complicated health I am used to food deprivation! But also because I am a woman and many, many women have practised some sort of food deprivation in their lives, or some sort of 'eating disorder' and its difficult for me to imagine people with a perfectly organised lifestyle who never rush in the mornings, and always leave time for a sit down breakfast and lunch instead of rushing out of the door and grabbing an apple. Especially in this weather, do people really want to eat a lot everyday in this weather?0 -

Actually you do, this if nothing else proves you are making things up as you go along.

on the 2 days where you eat around 600 calories, do you not feel hungry? how do you cope?
No I don't feel hungry, I fil up on things that are dense in fibre but low in digestible carbs, like brassica vegetables, vegetable fruits, mushrooms, with a little white fish, low fat natural fromage frais or tofu.
Sometimes I struggle to finish my main meal. It must be harmful and stupid being as socialy inept as you, though, do you talk to people like that in the real world? Do a lot of folk avoid you?The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Harmful? - well I am on the 5:2 and no longer suffer from arthritis pain in my joints or acid reflux. I am down in weight by over a stone and have lost the fat round my waist. I have more energy and don't eat between meals.
Stupid? I would have been stupid to carry on overeating. A balanced diet is all very well but we are not perfect beings and we love to eat. The 5:2 helps you to get back to a balanced diet.
I've just discovered ths thread and it's interesting to me because my husband is doing the 5:2 diet at the moment.
It's good to read that it's been successful for many people.
He needs to lose about 3 stone I would say, and especially the fat round his waist, that's what caught my eye about your post....how long would you say it took you to lose the weight you have?0 -

unbiased? It's a paleo blog, with no science behind it at all. Even says "if you experience this day in day out" day in day out isn't intermitent or periodic. That's beofre he starts making his "points".The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

don't believe you sorry, 600 calories is not enough, its starving yourself (which is stupid)
The amount of calories the body needs (Basal metabolic rate) is over 1000, usually around 1500.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Good luck to your husband! I've lost 2 stone since the end of February. I didn't really try or do 5:2 at all during June though but have started back up again. I want to lose another stone.
I think from reading through here what's clear is that it's very different for each person. But 2lbs is about average if he's exercising regularly aswell.0 -

It's clearly not starving yourself. You're still eating. And it takes a damn site more than eating 500/600cals a day for 2 days a week for your body to enter starvation mode.
I feel hungry at times but no more than any other day.
I had a medical recently for a job and the doctor mentioned that he can tell that I look after myself and keep myself fit. I think a doctor is capable of noticing if I'm doing serious harm to myself.
Why don't you try looking up some facts, and like I suggested watching the Horizon programme before branding it stupid? Or are you the type who'd rather stick rigidly to an unfounded PoV than actually consider the facts?0 -

You don't need to make the basal metabolic rate every day. your body uses up calories from it's fat reserves and other sources, that's why we have them. It is not stupid, I am not stupid, who does that leave? The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Well, we don't believe your rubbish either.
Now, be a dear, go and preach where you are wanted and leave us alone.:pI lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0
