I googled gavin walsh and he seems to talk some sense about not treating it as a fad ( and says the same about juice fasting) and how it can work as a lifestyle but not as a diet and goes on aout people viewing it as a diet and thats why its going to fail and then goes on to say he does paleo (surely the same applies . But has a sweet tooth. :). He seems as conflicted as as the rest of us! :)

Yes he does have a sweet tooth, his email updates say so, I did one of his 30 day challenges, exercise and diet, in the days before I did metafit classes and it was almost the end of me. I still get his email updates, he does talk a lot of sense.

Good luck to your husband! I've lost 2 stone since the end of February. I didn't really try or do 5:2 at all during June though but have started back up again. I want to lose another stone.

I think from reading through here what's clear is that it's very different for each person. But 2lbs is about average if he's exercising regularly aswell.

Thanks! :) I think he's finding it easier than he thought he would, but it's finding different things to eat so it doesn't get samey and so he doesn't get sick of eating just the same things all the time on the low calorie days.

Congrats on the weight loss btw, it sounds like its really working well for you!

all I can say is that you must be extremely disciplined to only eat 500 calories a day, its madness!

It's only on 2 seperate days a week I eat only 600 (I eat between 2,340 and 2,760 on other days.)

On the low calorie days, what are people's typical menus? What do you have for lunch, and then what do you have at night to keep within the 600 calories per day? Just wondering then I can get some meal ideas together.

i have either toast (no butter) with a couple of tinned plum tomatoes and a poached egg or 40g of porridge with a few sultanas in and then nothing to eat, just no cal drinks until the evening. so i eat at around 6am and not again until 7pm when i might have a tuna salad or a half a steak and masses of veg. Fish for dinner is another option again more veg.

I'm pretty boring and have the same thing on both days that I make up in advance.
A curry lentil soup with spinach that comes to about 125 kcal, and for dinner I have a white fish (coley) curry added spinach with 50 g of bulgur wheat, unless everyone else is having brown rice, then I will as well. I also have enough kcal left to have 100 g of grilled butternut with my curry.
Following horizon 5-2 started 28/01/13 target where I am now ish :)
Maintaining now as DW doesn't want my legs to get any skinnier :D

    Fast day going well.

The heat destroyed my weekend, far too much liquid and not the water variety.

I will weigh next week as I'm an emotional eater and a bit all or nothing. I need to see scales move.

That's why this diet suits me.

Evening musing - I wonder if trolls are fat?

In Old Norse sources, beings described as trolls dwell in isolated rocks, mountains, or caves, live together in small family units, and are rarely helpful to human beings. (Wikipedia so it has to be true)

I always link this when people ask, because it shows how great it can be.

DH eats more like that on his fast days ( which he does on his days way at work) because he eats at work and the menus have calorie counts and its easy for him to select a gourmet low cal well calculated meal. Other wise he does more like I do in this weather; I am on a fairly restricted diet ATM for health reasons. In weather like this I find it easier to stick to raw fruits or veg which are similarly easy to cal count and 'feel' good to eat. They would not work for me if I were catering for a family and felt the need to provide a more balanced diet.

In the past or in colder weather I might stick to veg. (Generally steamed, and maybe served with a sauce also allowed for) or egg and crumpet if I am feeling more protein and less virtuous about carbs, or egg and spinach if I am not wanting carbs for some reason.

I also am one of those strange people who seems to thrive on milk. So a glass of milk, or a smoothie, or a veg juice (I love veg juices), particularly as I sometimes find raw salads and veg very hard to digest but find juices much easier (and yes, I have sought medical advice for this) . Tbh if juicers were easier to clean I'd probably just juice my way through fasts .

Nobody eating a balanced diet needs protein supplements.
A woman needs only 60-80 g per day and most people consume far more than they need.
Interestingly, the article on IF in the new scientist a few months ago was showing some interesting link between excess protein consumption and the classic degenerative illnesses.

Don't fret over the troll rosy; the strength of their argument, the level of their knowledge and general eloquence makes them easy to dismiss!
I was nt recommending protein supplements. You were ignorant of the need for omega 3 and calcium in the diet to aid fat loss. the link explained why. however for the average person if you eat protein in the form of cooked meat only a smallamount is in a condition that is assimible Because of heat corruption much of the aminoa acids you eat will be part broken down and stored as energy (fat) and the rest excreted in the urine. Urine contains a varying amount of nitronen which is not present in fat or carbs so you may be able top guess where it comes from now. people who understand nutrition realise that calorie counting is largely a waste of time as only part of the body's needs from food are calories. You would notice very different results if you gave 3 sets of people their 2000 calories a day in the form of 1) pure sugar, 20 just butter and 3 whey protein. All would have ingested the same amount of calories but results would differ
I like to give people as many choices as possible to do what I want them to. (Milton H Erickson I think)
