This looks like a great idea. I might give it a try. I would donate the stuff to the kid's school and local charities for raffle prizes. How many people would benefit from that?

Nice idea everyone. It's part & parcel of MSE that we do tend to criticise companies anyway rather than praise - part of the territory really, but I think you should balance it up, and I try to when I remember. I do that partly because I think that a lot of these CS people at companies have a genuinely awful job to do and since they get disgruntled and cross people all day to deal with, they might really appreciate (and be more ready to help :) ) those who thank them for their efforts.

    2 recent examples:

    1. The Lovefilm/Boots voucher fiasco. I did thank the Boots CS people who sorted it out - they made their company look fantastic particularly compared to the awfulness of Lovefilm.

    2. The schools review M&S voucher offer. When I emailed the contact to say I'd written the review I told them what a good idea it was and got an appreciative reply. Hopefully that enhances my chances of getting the voucher too! :)

One time when I was working, a chap needed help - he wanted a games console, but didn't know where to start. I spent just over half an hour going through everything with him, talking about pros and cons, games etc. He was so happy he came back an hour later with a big box of chocolates. It really made my day :D

Not freebies to ourselves, but in some places, if you sing praises about a certain SA, they sometimes get bonuses. With GAME, if you had good service from one particular person, they get a £10 voucher for a bunch of shops in thier paycheck.

I sent a "nice" letter to Shell, they sent me a complete set of Shell V power collector cards in a presentation folder. My little boy was delighted.

    What goes around comes around!

When I used to work for PC World, we once got a letter someone had written to say how helpful I'd been to him and how much he'd appreciated it, and that because of it he'd recommended the store to his colleagues - about 40 other people. I got a free DVD of my choice for it! But more importantly, I've still got that letter, and I feel good whenever I read it, as sales assistants - especially commission based ones like at PC World - always have a bad press, and they aren't always that bad...

So yes, I think it's a good idea to write praising anything worth it, irrespective of what you might get back in return. Being agoraphobic, I don't really deal with many people and the ones I have recently haven't been too worth praising (Virgin Media? 2 weeks without internet. Tesco? Ridiculous substitutions, etc etc). So I'm probably not going to be able to 'join in' - but it's still a great idea.
  • What a lovely idea,

I had that book as a kid Nick, I think its helped me in my quest to be a good moneysaver!!

I wrote to a holiday company to tell them how wonderful it was. I had a nice letter back (no gifts or freebies!) and that was enough - it made me feel good.

Count me in if theres gonna be a club!! - I'd go to the opening of an envelope (as my friends would say!)
If you don't have something nice to say don't bother saying anything at all.
