Queenie good to see you back with us again!

Having trouble getting my head out of a great book called Our Hidden Lives by Simon Garfield the everyday diaries of a forgotten Britain 1945 - 1948 taken from the Mass Observation records. I have got up to where bread is about to be rationed! Life was really hard back then, the war over but rationing still on and in some cases so much worse. We are so lucky!
Anyway back for more :coffee: It is my friends 30th anniversary today and I have a card to sort/make/buy!

    Have a great day!

Thanks for all the advice guys. We didn't meet online as such, we've known of each other for years. We chat regularly on msn which is where he's VERY flirtatious. Seeing him tonight, so I'll see what happens. I haven't really got the energy to do any chasing, so if I go all quiet, we'll see how interested he really is

Good morning everyone! I finally got back on the internet on Friday - 2 weeks to the day since I moved house, I've been having withdrawal symptoms!

We're just about settling in okay, and I've been spending a lot of time in the garden (as those of you on the greenfingered board will know!). It feels so great to actually have a garden that gets sunshine and has trees around, rather than my old 20' garden that backed onto a main road and got no sunshine at all. Let alone, of course, the allotment as well! We've got garlic, onions, parsnips and early carrots in the ground already, potatoes in a pot, and lots of seeds indoors - radishes, more onion, leeks, cabbages, and lots of tomato plants. We've nearly finished removing the turf to make all the beds we need for it all!

Yesterday I put in a big tesco order online so when that arrives I can get on with starting cooking - the last two weeks OH has been doing it and we've been having quite a lot of takeaways, but yesterday I wrote out a meal plan (for the first time!) and shopped for it. I've got a months worth of meals I can make but I'm not sure which one to start with. I'll see if I get any rubbish substitutions first...It's exciting though because it's all down to you lot on here - I've never cooked for OH and we've been together nearly 6 years! Before I met him, I used to cook for my ex and I, and also for my old housemate as well, so I know I can / could do it. OH is a very confident cook though and kind of looks over your shoulder if you even step into the kitchen, so I never felt comfortable doing it. Now he works in London though and we only have a couple of hours together in the evenings before fall into bed exhausted (he has a London job, I have a 2 year old!). So I'm taking over the cooking! :o

Wish me luck, folks...at very least I can start with a spag bol.

Hugs to everyone that needs it, sounds like I've missed quite a lot of news...I'll catch up soon enough!

Catznine - My mum was born in 1945, and she grew up with her mum cooking in a rationing "style". She also has a habit of stockpiling food. Mum and Dad now have tins and tins of food under the spare beds and in the cupboard under the stairs because the kitchen is already full of BOGOFs! She also has a compulsion to feed everyone as much as possible, all the time. She is convinced that this it's due to her growing up at that time. Mum makes brilliant good old fashioned food too, like pies (her own pastry of course) and suet puddings. She says that as much as it was hard, she has great food memories of growing up and I love to hear about them. The book sounds really interesting :)

Morning everyone! I have another delicious day off work, which is very much appreciated as I'm trying to get my head in order and make some plans for when baby arrives (only 16 weeks to go! ) and life turns upsides down. I'm a bit of a middle of the road Old-Styler, tend to fall off the wagon once in a while, but that's going to have to change when my wage disappears for 6 months!

Today is a beautiful day, but I'm going to spend at least some of it sitting online working through bank statements etc and doing a projected SOA for our new slimline income. It's going to be a squeeze, for sure, so after I've done that I think I'll take my last fiver (this saving malarkey really stings!) and see if the butcher has a cheapy ham shank for me. OH is grumbling because we had to have a vegetable based dinner last night (come one, homemade veg fajitas, homemade coleslaw and homemade fruit salad isn't exactly going to result in malnutrition!) so maybe a yummy pot of soup and some sort of toastie will keep him sated tonight.

I'm probably being a bit optimistic but I am looking forward to having the time to be at home with baby and enjoy running the house for a few months. Work is all well and good but home becomes a bit of a crash-pad, so a full-time return to OS will be a lovely and moneysaving change. I'll be a regular face in here come July (between feeds, nappies, baths ...etc ... :o

Anyways, must go do something constructive ... big smiles to those in need and I hope everyone is enjoying a taste of this lovely sunshine :)

My mum was born in 1942, and is exactly the same re stockpiling, so much in fact she has passed the trait down to me!!! I am having a lot of problems trying to run down my cupboards and freezer, i always like to have at least one of everything, as spare and one opened, and if i see a special offer, im there in a flash!!!!

Crazychik, I think I'm just busy! I've got a lot done but only because I'm flitting back and forth between about 25 things that all need doing...and some get finished quicker than others.
I'm a bit of a list-maker. which I always pretend to myself is organisation, but I suspect is actually a way to avoid doing the things I should be doing...
