Too Hot Curry

Options
Am a little embarrassed to admit this, but I must have slipped when making this one. It's a Madras, and the first mouthful BURNS! I am not joking! I've tried greek yoghurt, but it was no help. This is a batch cook, can anybody help to make it more edible, I would be gutted to waste it!

Thanks in advance.

  • try using a can of coconut milk - wont matter if youcant get it until tomorrow. I made a huge curry in the slow cooker that was just toooooo hot even for our tastes ..the coconut milk worked a treat!

throw in a chopped apple and cook it a bit longer... usually sweet stuff would bring down the level of heat in a curry or chilli dish... or try sugar as a last resort? :D
  • Try adding some mango chuckney.

    Hope that helps.

Any chance of making a second batch with no chilli and mixing them together? If you can't do it today the first batch will keep until tomorrow.

pop in a few potatoes and simmer away this will reduce the heat of the curry i believe they absorb the heat! you can throw away the potatoes at the end as they will be very hot! or leave in or make another potatoe curry! good luck, Jane

i had this problem a few years back with a chilli, it was almost inedible (in fact, a friend was visiting and um... she's brazillian, likes hot food, and it was beyond her!) i tried everything, potato, yoghurt, squeeze of lemon - in the end up it was just too far gone and i ended up chucking it.

anyway, the lemon one is one i haven't seen suggested yet. squeeze lemon juice in, see if that helps.

Failing that i'd go with cooking up another big batch of mince with veg and adding it to the chilli/curry. You'll just wind up with an awful lot.. i hope you have a freezer!

If I end up with a curry that's too hot for the kids I usually add some single cream and heat it through gently, or in a pinch some milk will do (we're not that fond of coconut milk). Adding some chopped fresh tomatoes towards the end also cools things down a bit, or use them as a garnish.
