will be interesting to c if barclays pass base rate increase on, my guess is unlikely as no incentive to with new applications soon no longer to be available and barclays know people wont transfer out till another provider is at least 0.50% higher than barclays which probably wont occur during 2007, what others think

I got a reply to my complaints letter today from Barclays with a cheque for £20 as a goodwill gesture, yay. More than makes up for the interest and hassle! Also they did take the time to explain what exactly had happened in my situation (the branch staff had not validated my proof of address correctly, durrbrains), so I'm quite pleased.
  • I applied on 4th April for the 07/08 tax year. Been 6 weeks now and not heard diddly-squat! Sadly the plan was to open with a cheque for £100 and then transfer £2900 straight after so looking at only getting back-dated interest on the measly £100.

This is my first go at banking with Barclays and not been the most impressive of experiences so far!

For those of you looking for timescales of how long these accounts take to open, my experience was:

April 7th, application and chq given to branch - advised that account would take 2-3 weeks, biz card of advisor and receipt was given along with invite to call her personally if I did not receive anything after 3 weeks.

    8th May, Chq cashed.

9th May, 'welcome pack' received with sort and account number, no confirmation of balance, opening date recorded as 30th April.

11th May, called 0800 number, pleasant lady Elizabeth Davies confirmed account opening date on system was 7th April and interest would be back dated.

Do any of you know how often statements are posted by snail mail? Or do I really have to open a current account and apply for online banking to find out how much interest I get each month ?

Nice one. I likewise went into a branch on the 7th of April with a cheque, also says on my internet backing that the cheque was cashed on the 8th, pack arrived last week dated the 8th saying the account was opened on the 3rd of May. I would guess given the similarities they should have the 7th of April as the date the proper date of opening & backdate the interest to then. I have not bothered calling given what has happened to folk here but on the 1st of june I will be checking that interest.

I would get online banking if I were you.

 I went into my local branch today my account still hasnt been opened although i submitted my application in on 12/04/07!! I can not add funds as i dont have a barcleys current account so am stuck i said ok i want to close it then as it has not been opened and i want my money back. I was told I coundnt close it untill it was unopened then i could!! DOHH what are theses people on? I said cant you see i would lose the ability to have a new money isa for this tax year in that case!! I got a little irrate. I said i wanted to see the manager i was told he was in a meeting and that he would phone me today!! YEAH right. So i went over to the woolwich which is where i bank (soon to become barcleys) and was told the cheque was still uncashed!! Where is it sitting I ask myself. So i explained the situation and was told i could cancel cheqque if it was lost. So know i have to try and get proof its lost?

Does anyone have any advice what to do next please?

    Thanx

    Just by way of background.....
Applied as a non Barclays a/c holder for their ISA on 19 March for 2006/07 tax year. Processed quickly at the branch with no hassle or nonsense about opening a current a/c etc.

On 14 April received a letter stating my ISA had been opened on 5 April (ie just before close of 2006/07 tax year) - no confirmation of balance.

16 April my cheque was cashed (ie went through my Lloyds a/c)

Sometime during the first week of May spent about an hour trying to get through on their helpline - finally succeeded. Balance was confirmed and I arranged to have monthly paper statements sent to me

21 May first statement arrived - showing a/c opened on 10 April (!) and 25 days interest credited (for period 5 April to 30 April).

Phoned 0800 number - found it on this thread :) (tried twice earlier on 0845 No...each time after going through the extensive menu was cut off as they were too busy!!) - straight through to most helpful lady. Explained situation (ie missing interest from 19 March to 4 April). She said she couldn't credit ISA account...had to be done by ISA team - if she raised the complaint it would take 20 working days to sort out owing to the backlog on ISA queries. She said she could however credit a Barclays account with the missing interest (which I don't have) - fortunately my wife does - so she now has a £10 credit!!

    What a shambles............

So they cashed my cheque a couple of days ago, and today I recieve a letter telling me that the account from which I wish to place a standing order is a savings account! !!!!!!!?! I've only been using the current account for 10 years!!!
So the saga continues.... Lucily the cheque was only for £10, and the main bulk of money I was gonna put in is still earning decent interest.

Barclays Bank.... What a load of old s*** (as Nan would say!)
