Well done!
My brain immediately conjured up “Tonight’s the night for dancing”! Possibly the Nolan sisters!1 -
Congratulations @caeler!! I too felt a little numb and I wondered if it was the fact that it had taken up such a big space in my head, budgeting, counting down the months....but then when it came to it, nothing physically changed. So it felt like a bit of a let down almost.
I ended up doubling down and starting to save even harder for retirement - it's taken a couple of months to relax and say to myself that retirement is important, but not to the extent that eg I can't buy the things I planned to after becoming mortgage free and enjoy the freedom of the additional money. First thing was bought yesterday (new walking boots) and it's helped me to realise that I finally achieved it

Absolutely amazing! You’re not going to know yourself when you don’t have to put all your wages on mortgage payments.I would definitely try and enjoy yourself after you’ve rebuilt a bit of an emergency fund! You said you’re not even 40 yet. Life is for living now so make the most of it. I know MSE has a big focus on pensions etc but there’s no guarantee that any one of us will live to draw our pension. I’d just contribute to pension at a standard rate and then use your savings from the mortgage to live comfortably and make the most of everyday!Really really well done! You’re my MFW inspiration. I hope to be starting a 365 day countdown in another 5 years lol! XMortgage started August 2020 £69,700

Wowowowow! @caeler that's absolutely amazing! Really what a great achievement. And before 40 as well.
I can understand the bit about being numb. I think you might feel it a bit more when you don't have to make your normal monthly mortgage payment. I was mortgage free once before on my first starter home, and that's when it hit me, when I realised I had an extra £600 in my account each month!
I hope you have fun with your mortgage freedom bucket list!
Mortgage free as of March '25!
£240,000 paid off in 4 years, 8 months and 18 days (July '20-Mar '25)
