Yes, you made the 1st correct advice in post #8 :T:T

The last bit above tho' is incorrect in detail.

There no one around to report the accident to, maybe it should have been reported within the 24hr period after?, unsure.
And I'm going to make an assumption here, that the driver actually reversed into the car and then drove off.

IE You have to stop when going backward in order to go forwards.

Pedantic?, yes of course it is but it would be argued through. ;);)

As soon as practicable and in any case within 24 hours.

Stop means stop and exchange details

Stop actually means stop for long enough for someone who reasonably can require you to provide your details, to ask you to do so.

There isn't a fixed period of time for which you must stop, nor must you wait until someone comes past / asks you for your details.

As stated, if you do not provide your details for whatever reason, you must report to the police station as soon as reasonably practicable and in any event within 24 hours.

The car was back in my street again few nights ago so my son in law followed it back to the drivers house, could not believe he only lives a few streets away. He took photos of the car and it had my colour paint on his bumper and wing.
I phoned the police and they clearly said they hit and failed to stop, and give them copies of my damage and the other cars damage. they are 100% confident its him. Police said would you like his insurance details for the claim ? I said yes I would. He said let me check your details first to see if the my car had valid tax, mot and insurance which it did. He then radioed the other drivers plate....then repeated the plate....then repeated the plate and make model... then said I am going to now go to his house to see what his story is and left, He said he would be back.
He never came back nor did I get the other drivers details

So typical. Sounds like a call centre making promises and not following through. I would escalate the issue higher now. What's the point of reporting things if they don't get actioned? Cops making promises and then doing nothing is not acceptable. You would expect this from a BT call centre (e.g. "David" from India promising to call you back about your direct debits and then not doing it), but not from a public body.

Give them a chance, OP only spoke to them yesterday.

    No you don't.

You can allow the other driver/insurance company to sue you personally.
...which would often be pointless, because few people have the means to pay the sort of claim which can come from a serious road accident. Hence the requirement to have third party insurance in the first place, and the legislation requiring you to provide details of your insurance when a claim is made, which both thenudeone and I have already linked to.

Take a look at the 1st post, there was no one "who reasonably can require you to provide your details, to ask you to do so." present at the time.

who reasonably can require you to provide your details, to ask you to do so.

Thereby the blue bit becomes irrelevant.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

If it was outside a house would it not be reasonable to knock the door?

Not if he didn't know which house the car belonged to, and as the op said in a later post he was back a few nights later, it probably happened at night.
Would it be reasonable to knock randomly on possible owners doors at night?

Well, that's the reason the driver would hide behind anyway.

It happened at 4pm so good lighting conditions and CCTV footage shows my car move with the impact. Their car has been back twice since then, but parks up the street.
Still no word from the police, I have rang and they say its still on going.
