I open a dispute on day 4 as well and close it exactly 4 days later. If they pay I thank them and ship the goods, if they don't then I block and move on and consider it one more strike for a time waster. If you didn't pay because you think you weren't given long enough then you'll soon find you have all the time in the world to pay- as you won't be able to bid on anything.

4 days is perfectly long enough to either pay or contact a seller to ask for a little more time- I think I am fairly standard in my time frames as many sellers use the automated system which just opens a dispute on day 4 regardless. I don;t run a charity, buyers expecting me to wait more than the 8 days are just being daft- if you can't afford something then yes i am very sorry for you, but DON'T BUY IT.
That's a quite impressive customer service attitude, but I guess we live in the days of instant gratification...

What has being a charity got to do with it - nobody is asking for the goods for free!

The longer you leave it the more chance you have of losing money, it might not be the case for everyone. Apart from fees hanging on to sold items that aren't paid for does cost money. If you're a regular seller, you need items to be bought and paid for as quick as possible.

If I sell an item that someone waits 10 days to pay for, then they decide they don't want it, I've spent 10 days storing it, lost out on someone else wanting to buy it and may potentially only be able to sell it for a lower price. There are a lot of sellers who sell time sensitive items, so they could end up getting nothing back.

The vast majority pay straight away, so 4 days without contact is long enough to wait, especially for fixed price items.

That said, just ignore me, I have no compassion;)

I've got two non payers at the moment. Ebay really should bring in some rules that buyers should pay promptly. At least within 48 hrs. In a shop you can't just wander off with the goods just sitting there!
Has the buyer got the goods?

Seriously - you open a dispute after 4 days???

If a seller did that to me, I would deliberately take as long as I could to pay and/or would not at all.

I would suggest that 10 days is more suitable; the person could have gone away or whatever and not been able to pay, or had just plain been busy.

I recently sold a PC and the buyer took a while to pay, but they did.

I have had buyers contact me saying they can't pay for x amount of days/weeks as they will be away or are waiting to be paid. This is not a problem to me because I know they are going to pay and I appreciate them letting me know. If more ebayers would do this then I really don't think most reasonable sellers would mind hanging on to the item for them.

On a couple of occasions when I have raised a non-payment case the ebayer has then gone ahead and paid. They hadn't paid for recorded delivery but I chose to spend more and send it that way as I didn't want to run the risk of claiming they hadn't received their item (possibly having only paid because they didn't want a strike). Isn't worth the risk.

I totally agree with Soolin's reply.

If you would deliberately take as long as possible to pay/or not pay at all that is your choice.

If you paid by 4.30pm Mon to Fri your item would be shipped that day.

If you didn't pay at all, I'd just close the case, get my fees back, block you from bidding on my items, relist the item and you'd get a strike.

If you need more time to pay, message me and let me know. I don't mind waiting a few days. I don't mind waiting up to a week for cheques or postal orders. Just as long as I know what's going on.

Buyers on ebay expect a good, fast and honest service from sellers.

Why shouldn't sellers expect the same for buyers?

    No they haven't.

But on the same token the shop wouldn't put them aside for 10 days in the hope that the buyer would pay for them.

Not sure if it's the same for non-business sellers, but at work we can set it to start filing a claim automatically just a few days after the item is bought but not paid for. A lot less hassle that way.

That's available for all users, it can be set to open a case as early as day 4. Most business sellers I know use it, unfortunately when I try to set it up on my own account it won't work- but that is probably user error!

I'm getting an increasing amount of buyers not paying.

Is there a nice way of giving them a nudge with opening a NPB as i've had a few who've got quite nasty that i have had the nerve to do that.
