agreed and some people should show compassion for others
What exactly is the definition of "moaning" these days?
my latest mess about , dropped a bid on 5 days before and isnt interested in completing , a complaint to ebay got both listing and final fee back but still , i dont need this hassle and ebay remain uninteresting in policing there system properly
I don't understand what you want Ebay to do above what they do now. If all sellers had their buyer requirements set correctly and reported non payers there would be less of a problem, it will never go away though.

Even live auctions get non paying bidders, no matter what they do, even after taking deposits.

RFW i agree , I frequent a few auction houses and the topic of non payers has come up time and time again. One auction house now takes photographic ID and threaten people they will be legally chased if they don't pay whereas a year or two back it was all much more casual with people bidding merely after filling out a self declared name and address form.there is still plenty of non layers though.

One house takes deposits , £50 for standard auction items and if you want to bid on the plant and machinery (they do HMRC sales) the deposit is £200 .

Also one House that has had real problems with bouncing payments asks you to register and verify your card with them before you bid if they don't know you. The equivalent of the paypal check.

The change in non payers (and I have seen a recent increase), has nothing to do with feedback, I personally think it has a lot to do with shopping basket, with buyers forgetting they have something else in their basket when checking out, finding they don't have enough to pay for all they have bought.

My post wasn't particularly targetted at you, but as you say "everyone is entitled to express their opinion on a public forum":p

    :p:beer:

Yes I imagine the shopping basket may have something to do with it...easy to bid and pay for things here and there but seeing totals for several items may stop people from paying for an impulse buy.

There has also been suggestions that the mobile phone apps don't help. People buy and due to security plan to use PayPal later from a pc or laptop, and just don't bother.

Unfortunately, as with Ebay none of it much helps if they don't pay up, it's a crap shoot for taking legal action as you have no idea if they have any money to pay up.

My biggest memory of a non payer when I did auctions, was one guy I knew fairly well who spent around £2000 and left deposit of £50. Obviously we kept the £50, but the next sale the goods sell for quite a bit less. As with Ebay the only real 'weapon' against a non payer is to stop them bidding again, that's the only real reason for taking id.

I have known a few auctioneers who have taken legal action, if/when they win there is still a big hurdle to get any money back, getting a CCJ against someone isn't much better than giving a neg if they haven't got any money.

Yes don't you just hate non-payers....and as for 2nd chance offer, hardly any take it up....makes me wonder if they would have been non -payers too!
Never put off until tomorrow what you can avoid doing altogether.:D

I've got on car on ebay under classifieds hoping that that I would avoid the timewasters, but to no avail.
I had a best offer made in which I accepted no sooner than 5 minutes later that same guy messaged saying he did not wont tp proceed as it was his 17yr old son and he cant get insurance,so I reply'ed not a problem as long as you pay my relisting fee's,his reply was i wont pay your relisting fee's,but report away if you wish,I wont be the one with negative feedback.

According to another recent thread if a buyer gets a second chance offer it means the seller is a scammer and shill bidder

Whilst having the ability to tighten up buyer requirements helps, I can't understand why eBay doesn't have a "X non-payment strikes and you're off eBay" arrangement.

What's the point of eBay allowing a platform for time wasters, who routinely fail to pay, requiring action to reimburse fees later and relying on sellers to have to filter them out to stop the situation arising?

Just asking (from a mostly buyer perspective) but are you saying, if I put something in my basket and then don't check it out and pay it flags on the seller's side as sold and me as a non payer?
The reason I ask is because it could be a fundemental misunderstanding buyers have over how the shopping basket works.
On other sites, like Amazon or on other retailers, you can add or remove things from your basket at will and nothing is finalised until you click to checkout. I know in Amazon, for instance, I've had things sitting in my basket for up to a week or more (not just "save until later" but my actual basket). Sometimes I've changed my mind and deleted stuff from my basket. Pretty sure I may have done the same on Ebay. Does that mean I have, effectively, been a NBP on ebay?
