Checkouts & Hygiene

Dont forget the rats at night !!!!ing over the trolleys left outsideWhy are you picking on checkout staff?
You buy a product from a supermarket which has been handled by loads of people in the supply chain before it reaches the supermarket shelves, But that's another story.
Did you wash your hands before loading your trolley?- Or are they the same hands that have been on the car steering wheel which hasn't been cleaned in years.
- Or the hands that have been on the door handle?
- When was the last time you sterlised your car keys?
- Or holding little Johnny's hand - bet he didn't wash them.
- Did you wash the trolley handle?
- Then you handle the shopping twice more putting it on the conveyor belt and packing it into bags.
- Bet you didn't wash your hands again
- The bag for life hasn't been cleaned since you bought it.
- Then take your shopping to the car. Did you wait for the rain to stop?
- Those car keys again.
- When was the last time you gave the car boot a really good clean?
- You have just handled the boot lid.
- Bet you didn't wash your hands again after handling the car door, the garage door and the house doors - and the car keys.
- Then you just put the shopping bags straight on the worktops and unpack the shopping into the cupboards, fridge and freezer without thinking of washing any it.

Served the other day by a young girl who chewed her fingernails and looked around vacantly the whole time she was 'serving' me. _pale_ Completely oblivious to any sense of shame/hygiene/manners/courtesy.
I've complained about staff hygiene before, by phoning the manager. It doesn't do any good!
So, I assume this particular branch of Asda doesn't bother to give any basic hygiene training to staff (although it shouldn't be needed!).
Judging by quite a number of the checkout staff in our local Asda, I sincerely wonder about criteria for getting the job.
What do you believe you're at risk of? We're surrounded by billions of bacteria and other bugs all day, every day. That's why we have immune systems and, in fact, exposure to germs is healthy - too sterile an environment causes health problems.
If it bothers you make sure you regularly wash your own hands and then you can stop complaining about others."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
WOW! you only told us she bit her nails in your op . . sounds like she going from bad to worselikelyfran
NOT sucking your fingers, picking your teeth, audibly f@rting, scratching your head, or doing any other similarly obviously unhygienic and frankly rude things is just basic common sense/manners/normal for anyone with half a brain whilst working in retail0 -
I have to say I agree with Dave. The nail-biting checkout girl will just be the last in a long line of bacteria strewn entities who have touched your groceries. You often get birds flying round some of the huge supermarkets. There will be plenty of packets of food with bird bacteria or poop on them. That worries me more than checkout staff.
It's not pleasant to see people biting their nails or chewing their fingers, but unless she is licking customers faces, I think you are safe.
I once saw a man put his hand in the soup once in Sainsburys cafe - it was serve yourself from a deep container. I think the staff probably have more to put up with than the customers.
I liked the old Alan Coren joke - he likes Sainsburys because it keeps the riff-raff out of Waitrose.0 -
I can tell you what the criteria is for getting a job in Asda. When you are called back for a second interview you have to play silly games with a load of other hopefuls. Quite humiliating and embarrassing. After working in the retail for over 30 years, having to try and get a job by playing games that a 3 year old could do is so silly. It's to see if you are good at "bonding " with other people. Of course when you are desperate for a job you will do it.
However i found that Asda are very strict about higene and find it strange that they never followed up on your complaint.0 -
Checkout operator biting fingernails not so bad.
Germ-ridden trolley handles - well it's possible for a customer to wipe it with antibacterial wipes if it bothers them.
Checkout operator slightly turning to side, sneezing into hand, then using that hand to grab the groceries and push them along towards your bag - yuck. Yet people do it all the time, and smile, as if they are being polite and responsible by covering the sneeze with their hand. I wish supermarkets would provide a tub of antibacterial hand wipes for each checkout operator to use when they've sneezed.0 -

Ah but then you could complain to the supermarket and get compensation off them. If you go around throwing away opportunities like this to make money you can't consider yourself a true MSE member.
