Checkouts & Hygiene

Why would nailbiting constitute a hygiene issue ? I would have thought that was more of a risk for the checkout assistant than the customer ?
Because germs from the checkout assistant's mouth can then be spread to the shopping after she chews her nails then touches the shopping. You are right that it is also a risk for the checkout assistant.0 -
I know the feeling....I went to Tesco's new store in Dudley at 7am on Saturday morning. It wasn't just the checkouts that needed a hygiene check, it was the entire store.
It was disgustingly filthy, with rotting fruit and veg on the floor, thick layers of dust on some of the shelving, and just general packaging waste strewn the length of the main aisle.
I dread to think what it would be like after a full day's shopping traffic.0 -
you should look it from the checkout persons point of view - my sister works for Mr T, she regularly has people put their money or cards in their mouths before handing it over slightly damp. people with filthy hands and others that smell and are generally filthy.
I work at a checkout and once had a woman ask me to help her put her card in the machine after she had fished it out of her bra during a heatwave!
I would never chew my nails at work, partly for customer health and safety but mostly because of the stuff I have to handle!0 -
I went to the supermarket yesterday and was DIGUSTED that the checkout operators were not even wearing their sterile operating theatre clothing, masks and disposable gloves!
The till-side autoclave wasn't even working so that my change could be properly sterilised.

Its when they have their hands under the desk and then lift them up to smell their fingers is when you should be worried!0

Plus I wouldn't like to think a piece of fingernail inadvertantly dropped into my food either.:eek:0 -

Really? And that's why the girl that served me was sucking her fingers and not paying attention, Vicky Pollard style?
And if money and people's hands are so filthy, why do so many retail staff lick their own fingers after handling money?! Gross!*Look for advice, not 'advise'*

Go self service then it's not an issue
I do most of the time for reasons of several mingin and/or rude checkout staff, but believe me, those machines cause plenty of issues too!*Look for advice, not 'advise'*

Are you serious? :rotfl:
You (general you, not you in particular) work in a shop serving people and while you're serving them, you're sucking your fingers the whole time and that's not inappropriate in any way? Apart from looking mingin and being kind of bizarre and rude, that person is putting their saliva on their fingers and then handling your shopping items! Urgh!*Look for advice, not 'advise'*

Believe me, I wouldn't put it past several of the staff in our local Asda. :rotfl::T*Look for advice, not 'advise'*
