You (general you, not you in particular) work in a shop serving people and while you're serving them, you're sucking your fingers the whole time and that's not inappropriate in any way? Apart from looking mingin and being kind of bizarre and rude, that person is putting their saliva on their fingers and then handling your shopping items! Urgh!
How on earth can anyone monitor what a checkout assistant does with their hands when they are on their shift ? Do they wash after visiting the loo, do they pick their nose on their break, do they wear clean clothes every morning ? The list is endless, if you worry about this sort of stuff, you'd never leave the house.
In the grand scheme of things, it's not something that worries me (although i do understand that it worries you)0 -
Its not limited to asda unfortunately, i was in M&S a while back and the lady scanning my food had the most horrific case of dandruff and kept scratching her head and showering flakes everywhere:eek: I was so close to saying nevermind i'll just leave it all but being british i just smiled politely and took my scabby head covered shopping home:oThe trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0

They are not forced to, they could always stop claiming unemployment benefit and/or find ANY job ANYWHERE which will pay at least NMW.
The party politics of it is irrelevant. What I meant was that if someone feels they have been forced to do something, rather than wanting to do it, it's possible they are less likely to do a proper job.Why would nailbiting constitute a hygiene issue ? I would have thought that was more of a risk for the checkout assistant than the customer ?
Bite a hangnail or the nail a bit too deep and you get bleeding from the nailbed.
I don't fancy a smear of A positive on my apples or the baguette as it slips out of the packaging.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

I have worked in a supermarket, and ASDA isn't exactly know for attracting high end clientele.
It is horrible yes. I always made sure I went to work with clean hair, short fingernails so they couldn't get dirty and always wore deodorant and always wore a clean shirt.
I used to have a bottle of hand sanitising lotion in my pocket when particularly disgusting people had been near me. One guy pulled out a £10 note from the waistband of his underpants once...the SMELL. He looked like he hadn't washed for several weeks.0 -
So I imagine the OP used a basket or trolley without sanitising the handle?
And wandered around the store opening fridge and freezer cabinets without sanitising them?
And then queued up, probably putting their hands on the conveyor belt where other people lean on it?
But OMG the checkout girl touched her mouth OMG she'll have rabies and HIV and won't somebody think of those poor children?!'til the end of the line0 -
Retail is an industry where exceptional hygiene should be required for all roles at all times.
I'm always shocked at the low standards of some employers and their employees. While personal hygiene is evidently a low priority for the type of people that work in retail, it is something employers should teach at the very least. How hard is it to shower everyday and wash your hands from time to time?
What ignorant comments you do make!0 -

When are people who work on the tills supposed to go wash their hands from time to time? If they did that, snotty people on here would start complaining even more about there not being enough staff on the tills.'til the end of the line0 -
The law should require them to carry hand sanitiser and use this between each transaction.
Sure. And then this board will get flooded with people whining about how long it takes to get through the tills because the sales assistants have to clean their hands every five minutes.'til the end of the line0 -
If she was picking her nose or scratching her crotch I could see the problem, but chewing her nails? So what.0

Why are you picking on checkout staff?
You buy a product from a supermarket which has been handled by loads of people in the supply chain before it reaches the supermarket shelves, But that's another story.
Did you wash your hands before loading your trolley?- Or are they the same hands that have been on the car steering wheel which hasn't been cleaned in years.
- Or the hands that have been on the door handle?
- When was the last time you sterlised your car keys?
- Or holding little Johnny's hand - bet he didn't wash them.
- Did you wash the trolley handle?
- Then you handle the shopping twice more putting it on the conveyor belt and packing it into bags.
- Bet you didn't wash your hands again
- The bag for life hasn't been cleaned since you bought it.
- Then take your shopping to the car. Did you wait for the rain to stop?
- Those car keys again.
- When was the last time you gave the car boot a really good clean?
- You have just handled the boot lid.
- Bet you didn't wash your hands again after handling the car door, the garage door and the house doors - and the car keys.
- Then you just put the shopping bags straight on the worktops and unpack the shopping into the cupboards, fridge and freezer without thinking of washing any it.
