Checkouts & Hygiene

...seem to be mutually exclusive concepts in our local Asda.

Served the other day by a young girl who chewed her fingernails and looked around vacantly the whole time she was 'serving' me. _pale_ Completely oblivious to any sense of shame/hygiene/manners/courtesy.

I've complained about staff hygiene before, by phoning the manager. It doesn't do any good!

So, I assume this particular branch of Asda doesn't bother to give any basic hygiene training to staff (although it shouldn't be needed!).

Judging by quite a number of the checkout staff in our local Asda, I sincerely wonder about criteria for getting the job.

  • Are they workfare people?

Serious suggestion, I'm not saying it because it's a hygiene issue. Why bother looking right if you've been forced to go there and are doing it for less than minimum wage?

you should look it from the checkout persons point of view - my sister works for Mr T, she regularly has people put their money or cards in their mouths before handing it over slightly damp. people with filthy hands and others that smell and are generally filthy.

I suspect the biggest hygiene issue at a checkout is the money handling.

Those notes and coins must have been handled by many a dirty hand and must be minging.

    Self respect maybe?

Even more reason for the checkout girl to not put her hands in here mouth.

They are not forced to, they could always stop claiming unemployment benefit and/or find ANY job ANYWHERE which will pay at least NMW.

Where we live there are hundreds queuing outside the job center for their fortnightly appointments, yet there are always vacancies people advertised - albeit usually factory work etc but pays more than NMW!

    Hundreds queueing outside? Right!

That image was confined to the Ark some time ago -(see below).

People who 'sign on' have to attend on an appointment basis so it would be highly unlikely that 'hundreds' would be queueing in the streets.

"Find any job anywhere"? What planet are you on? I suspect you are making these statements from the comfort of being in employment or have not tried to seek employment in the past couple of years.

You suggested that there are 'always factory vacancies advertised' in there, so are you actually a jobseeker or just read this in the Daily Mail?

The statement on the bottom is quite amusing though!

Did you actually say anything at the time. Did you say anything to the supervisor when you had finished at the check out.

If no one does say anything she will keep on doing it because she doesnt realise she is doing anything wrong.

What about the staff who have to put up with unhygienic people too, it works both ways. How many of us have stood in a queue with a smelly person, or has bad breathe or lets one off. The staff have to endue this along with some rude ignorant customers.

Why would nailbiting constitute a hygiene issue ? I would have thought that was more of a risk for the checkout assistant than the customer ?
