Checkouts & Hygiene

  • I ALWAYS clean my hands when I get in the car and when I come in the house I wash them. I use my sleeve to open doors, and I regularly clean the steering wheel.

As it happens I find myself agreeing a bit with the OP if only because it's an annoying habit and very rude.
I do the checkout and have suffered for years with skin problems which got far worse on my face a few years ago - now it may be a coincidence but when I got fedup trying to get bags open and made myself a bag opening kit (just a coffee lid with a wet cloth in it to dip my finger in) my skin started to clear up and thankfully is still good.
My point is that whatever bugs are on the girls fingers (gross I agree) you would not believe how dirty that little cloth gets after handling cash.
btw I do have a little bottle of hand gel stuff so that if I sneeze/cough etc I use it between customers.

Retail is an industry where exceptional hygiene should be required for all roles at all times.

I'm always shocked at the low standards of some employers and their employees. While personal hygiene is evidently a low priority for the type of people that work in retail, it is something employers should teach at the very least. How hard is it to shower everyday and wash your hands from time to time?

I worked in retail for 2 1/2 years. I washed my hands regularly, wore my hair tied back, I CHOSE to keep my nails short because I didn't like the idea of dirt getting under them, wore clean uniform everyday and obviously showered and wore deodrant everyday (and still do). I was Checkouts as well but not always on a till and when I had to take raw meat back I'd wash my hands afterwards. My personal hygiene is fine and most of my colleagues had reasonable personal hygiene too.

But hey don't mind me getting in the way of your sweeping generalisation....¬¬

There's a reason I never buy serve-yourself salad, or select bread rolls that have been on open display - and it's that so many customers are 'less than thorough' about their personal hygiene.
At least I can wash fruit and veg!

...seem to be mutually exclusive concepts in our local Asda.

Served the other day by a young girl who chewed her fingernails and looked around vacantly the whole time she was 'serving' me. _pale_ Completely oblivious to any sense of shame/hygiene/manners/courtesy.

I've complained about staff hygiene before, by phoning the manager. It doesn't do any good!

So, I assume this particular branch of Asda doesn't bother to give any basic hygiene training to staff (although it shouldn't be needed!).

Judging by quite a number of the checkout staff in our local Asda, I sincerely wonder about criteria for getting the job.
I hope you have a Waitrose local to you likelyfran. They ask two questions before allowing the applicant to complete an application.
"Are you eligible to work in this country?"
    "Do you bite your fingernails?"

No to either and don't bother applying. They may be competing with Tesco prices, but their staff standards are still JLP.

So I imagine the OP used a basket or trolley without sanitising the handle?

And wandered around the store opening fridge and freezer cabinets without sanitising them?

And then queued up, probably putting their hands on the conveyor belt where other people lean on it?

But OMG the checkout girl touched her mouth OMG she'll have rabies and HIV and won't somebody think of those poor children?!

    Don't be ridiculous!

As a matter of fact, I DO wash my hands soon as I get home, after being out and touching supermarket basket handles, bus surfaces etc. etc.
    Perhaps that's just me!

However.... NOT sucking your fingers, picking your teeth, audibly f@rting, scratching your head, or doing any other similarly obviously unhygienic and frankly rude things is just basic common sense/manners/normal for anyone with half a brain whilst working in retail, no?

You really don't think so? :rotfl::rotfl::T

Agreed! Why anyone would want to pick up bakery stuff that's been sitting out all day with everyone breathing their bacteria and viruses all over it is beyond me. Sure, we'll pick up things anyway, can't guard against absolutely everything but we can help ourselves a bit eh!

    And you are?

Nice try at a witty one-liner from you, whoever you are, but you don't know me and you're talking out your *parp!*.
