If a cyclist annoyes me (which most do) then they get covered in diesel soot as I pass them.

We were stuck behind some what looked like arrogant road race cyclists who remained 3 a breast for miles not letting motorists pass.

Would have been much more difficult overtaking them safely if they'd been single file...........

    Think!

You complain about cyclist when the road is full idiots like this......

As a cyclist, I get irritated in general by most drivers who clearly have no regard for road laws in general, i.e. jumping red lights etc...
The drivers I find that are very good are the ones who are also cyclists.

In the meantime deaths of cyclists and pedestrians are increasing.

Firstly I didn't mean most cyclists, I just meant cyclists who have no regard for road laws.

Secondly my experience as a driver just sitting at a traffic light however has always been that there is an unsatisfactory percentage of cyclists (i'd say 1 in 5 from my own experience) that think it's okay if not 'their right' to jump a red light whereas I rarely encounter a driver who blatantly jumps a red (i.e. the light has been red for a period of time and not just turned red).

I can't vouch for drivers who speed or drive dangerously but I do believe that there is a lack of education among cyclists and only a select few truelly understand the dangers of the road. If someone drinks alcohol and drives and gets caught they rightly get a ban, what happens to a cyclist? Even though it is an offence, how do they prevent that cyclist getting on his bike under the influence again?

Do the stats you just provided break it down into what percentage is driver fault or cyclists fault? NO! because they rarely do!

I'm not knocking cylcists but I just think something along the lines of a proper testing and licensing system and stricter regulation needs to put in place just as much as better education for drivers about cyclists.

Why should cyclists be licensed? It's an activity that should be encouraged- not restricted with unnecessary complications. Should we license all pedestrians too because some walk out in the road?

Is life a game of emit as much carbon as possible to some people?!

You can't compare pedestrians to cyclists that have to a cyclist that are required to use the same roads that motor vehicles cycle on! Pedestrians should only ever be on a road to cross it!.

All i'm saying is there are still plenty of cases where accidents are the fault of the cyclists and so cyclists and drivers alike should stop passing fault on eachother and just take more responsibiluty!

Have a look at this LCC article, which in turn points to this TRL report on the causes of collisions with pedal cycles.

To quote from the LCC article:
Figures show drivers cause bicycle crashes
In crashes where a cyclist over 25 sustained minor injuries (the vast proportion of collisions), the motorist was entirely at fault in between 67% and 75% of incidents, and the cyclist solely at fault in only 16% to 22% of cases (p33).
When a cyclist over 25 sustained serious injuries, the motorist was entirely at fault in between 64% and 70% of the time, with the cyclist at fault in between 23% and 27% of incidents (p33).
In cases when a cyclist over 25 died in a crash, the motorist was deemed entirely at fault in between 48% and 66% of incidents (p33), and the cyclist in 33% to 43% (p33).

I just realised theres not point even debating, there will always be narrow minded drivers who think cyclists are a pest and there will always be narrow minded cyclists that think it's drivers that are the pest and very few in between that just want to make roads safer!

But the overwhelming majority of accidents on Britain's roads are caused by motorists and yet you still seem to want registration and training made compulsory for cyclists?!

If more people cycled, the roads would, imo, be a safer place. Your proposed restrictions on cycling will certainly not label it as an accessible and viable alternative to driving.

I agree that on occasion the fault lies with the cyclist. What I can say though is that in all my experience as a road user (cyclist and car driver) the majority of danger is caused by the motorist. It is mostly down to impatience and the feeling of being superior to anything 'smaller'. If drivers can get away from this mentality then maybe the roads would be a safer place for all.

Maybe roles should be switched for a while? I know that being a cyclist before passing my test has certainly had a massive effect on how I treat cyclists on the road.

I find some cyclists to be real nuisances, but they have as much right to use the road as I do, and they are creating less environmental impact in the process.

However having been on the back of a motorbike, I can also see just how vunerable they are as road users, and why the action of some motorists can provoke their poor attitude to other road users. And to pedestrians, having nearly been hit by a cyclist that thought they didn't need to stop on a zebra crossing the other morning.. I'm 6 months pregnant so that could have been really messy.

Like I said before, I'm not knocking cyclists, I think it should be encouraged as you say but we need a better system that what's in place now as we're not fortunate to have the cycle lanes in place that they have in Holland (which are fantastic).

I've seen numerous near misses related to cyclists jumling lights and I've seen and heard of numerous cases of cyclists driving while drunk and yet very little can be done.

Maybe not as strict a regulation as driver but some sort of licensing or database to at least track cyclists. Why is it okay that a cyclist can get back on his bike the next day if he's been caught drinking and riding his bike?
