My mum is famous for this - her worst being 18 years out of date candied peel

However, we are all still alive and the only time we have ever had food poisoning it was from food that was bought the same day and very much in date!

Chocolate does start to taste funny pretty quicky especially if it is not stored in perfect conditions so I would treat that with suspision. For the other stuff, if the date is 07 or 06 then I know I would still use it (as long as it looked and smelt ok).

....stir fried some prawns last night using a few drops of sesame oil with the sunflower. I noticed the BB date on the Waitrose sesame oil bottle was June 2006! It was still fine.

:o Have just found that the pasty I bought has gone out of date and should have been 'used by' ......... 31st Dec (hangs head in embarassment:o ). I haven't opened it but as it is only really flour, fat and water, would it still be okay to use do you think?

Just had to bin some unopened coleslaw and cheese so was hoping to salvage something.

    Thanks.

I've thrown away ready pastry when it had mould on it. give it the sniff test and see what it looks like. Would imagine it would be OK.

having come home one time to find DH making bacon slices, I mentioned I'didnt think he had had been to the shop to buy more pastry..... turned out the pastry he used was the pack that had sat at the back of the fridge -opened I add - for 3 weels past it's date:eek:

it looked & smelled fine tho & tasted good too;)

ours is a very cold fridge & stuff seems to last for ages (except salad stuff pushed to the back that gets slightly frozen:o )

Ok thanks I will open it and give it a sniff. Dates don't usually bother me too much, but thought I would just get some second opinions.

I don't usually worry about dates on packets but I've got some dried chick peas, haricot beans, adzuki and pinto beans which are dated 2003. Should I use them or chuck 'em?
