JSA applying for jobs.

How many jobs a week are you meant to apply for on JSA, and what happens if you can't/don't fulfill that number?

You don't have to apply for any jobs. You must take a number of actions, the number being on your Jobseeker Agreement, to find work each week. An action can be reading the jobs section in the local paper, browsing the jobcentre website or visiting employers or anything else mentioned on the Jobseeker Agreement.

If you do not fulfill the number you will be told about it when signing on and with the agreement of the adviser at the jobcentre you may have until the end of the day to fulfill the requirements and sign on or you lose payment. They may sanction you for 2 weeks.

No two JSA agreements are the same, read yours and see what it says then you will have your answer.

I dont have my booklet handy but you need to take 3 steps to look for work, mine was the job section in the local paper once a week, job sites and i think cover letters plus cvs on spec.

So what does it matter? When you first apply for JSA you would go to a meeting and make a Jobseeker Agreement with an adviser which details what work you are looking for, what wages you are seeking, what days and hours you are willing to work, how far you are willing to travel (it's 90 minutes each way) and by what methods (car, bus..etc) and what you are willing to do each week in return for payment. They make it as hard as possible and you would try and negotiate to make it as easy as possible. If you can't agree with the adviser then you can appeal to someone higher in the Jobcentre but really it isn't that hard to make a mutual agreement.

    Thanks for the info.

It matters as I want to know.

The law requires you to take no fewer than three steps per week to find work. Those steps must be the steps which afford you the best propsects of finding employment.

If jobs exist then applying for them would be the step which affords you those prospects.

A Jobseeker's agreement isn't what people think it is. You could quite easily satisfy everything on one and still be found to not be actively seeking employment

Re what you said earlier about another poster saying about applying for jobs a week, well that might have been something that was agreed between said person and his advisor from the start or hwne he had been on jsa for a few months.
