Its very easy and cheap to make your own pizza sauce.
I just fry chopped onion with some garlic until soft, add chopped tomatoes and herbs like Origano etc, I sometimes add a little sugar too. Cook through for a while then blitz with a electric blender until it becomes the consistency you like. Season with salt and pepper.
Any extra can be frozen in small quantities until needed again HTH
  • I do a similar recipe to Tulip 12, 1 diced onion, 2 cloves chopped garlic, 1 grated carrot and sometimes also a grated courgette or a little finely diced celery. A small palm-full of oregano and a little dried basil. All this gets softened gently in olive oil, then add a tablespoon of tomato puree, cook gently for another minute or two then add a tin/box of chopped tomatoes. Bring to the boil and then simmer to reduce. Sometimes I add a little sugar and a little balsamic vinegar to bring out the tomato flavour but it's not essential. I don't bother to blend as this comes out fairly fine anyway. My 4 year old son and my husband both love this. For adults you can add a teaspoon of chilli flakes to the sauce too. Like Tulip I also freeze in mini pizza size portions for the young man.

  • Instead of traditional tomato based sauce try using ricotta cheese for the base sauce instead. Just spoon it out and smear it around and then add your toppings.
  • Does anyone have any ideas about making your own pizza bases? Or are shop bought ones just as good?
Set your goals high, and don't stop till you get there.

  • I use normal bread dough for making pizza bases, there is usually some left over for dough balls from 500g of flour recipe. I've never used a shop bought base so can't compare! I used to make pizza sauce from tinned tomatoes etc, but I have started using a mix of tomato puree, a bit of tomato ketchup and herbs as it works out cheaper (this surprised me a lot!!)
  • Thanks everyone for your suggestions, will definately be trying them out. Will also try making pizza dough in the breadmaker as well - if all goes well will be making in bulk to save time and money
