Pizza Sauce Recipes, Tips & Quick questions

  • Simple tomato pizza base that leaves a bit left over you can use as a tomato pasta sauce!

1 x can tinned toms (either chopped or do it yourself if you are a true old-styler!)
    1/2 pint vegetable stock
some herbs and seasoning of your choice
    1 x tablespoon tomato puree
    1 x teaspoon garlic puree

Chuck it all in a pan as it is and boil for 20 mins or so till it reduces a bit leaving a rich and lush sauce. Spread what you need over the pizza base and you should hopefully have some leftover that makes a yummy basic pasta sauce (that I use for lunch the next day). For me it makes easily enough for two 8"ish homemade pizzas.

I haven't costed it but with the amount you get it must be super cheap compared to supermarket pizza base sauce.

I make a tray full of Roast Veg (Courgettes, toatoes, Aubergines, Cheap peppers and onions at the beginning of the week, and these go into everything in some way shape or form throughout the week. (Curries, Pasta sauces etc) I blitz some of this with tinned chopped tomatoes to make a delicious pizza topping that the kids rave about - even though they wont normally touch peppers, courgettes and aubergines.

    Hi all

I am going to make HM pizza tommorrow but i don't really want to go and buy the jars of pizza sauce from the shop, does anyone here have any ideas of what is in it. Or how I might make my own version.

    Is it just tomato puree??????

You can use tomato puree or some passata or some tinned chopped tomatoes or even some ketchip. I've used all of these in a hurry.

Or you can add some dried Italian herbs and garlic to some passata and a dollop of tomato puree and let it simmer down a little to thicken it. A glug of olive oil in it works nicely.

Yum. We're having pizza tonight. Enjoy yours!

  • If I have time, a slow cooked sauce of finely chopped onion, garlic, tinned tomato, herbs, all reduced down, is delicious.

If I'm in a hurry, tomato puree is great. Has anyone tried sun dried tomato puree

Don't use tinned tomatoes, straight from the tin - they give you a soggy bottom ;)

If you are using tinned tomatoes add a level teaspoon of sugar-it improves the flavour.
