I wonder how I get them to check that they haven't taken too much money from me in the past aswell? Seems they change things for no reason and don't fix it unless you notice and ring them up. Maybe they've messed up my tax code already a few times this year and i'm owed money? Is there some sort of form to check?
It's called a payslip, you check it each time you're paid, not just for the net amount but also all the deductions, do they look about the same as last time and if not why not? Also your tax code is shown each time, so if it changes then you ask why.

If it was a mistake to change your tax code, then you could ask them to give you an advance on the tax which is going to be refunded to you next time, to even out your income. I know I would! If it wasn't a mistake, and they really were sent a P6, then you could ask HMRC what happened to your change of coding notice ...

between the 18th and the 20th of January, I got sent 4 letters from the HMRC all telling me I had a new tax code for the year 6 april to 5 april 2012.
All 4 letters had different tax codes. They were:
    667L, 91T, 358T, 464L.
I didn't know what on earth was going on and I couldn't get through to them at the time.

Im wondering if Im due any money back from that messup? Is it common to be sent 4 letters in 2 days, each with a different tax code?

Any money that you're due should be taken care of with your replacement tax code, which will automatically cause your employer to get the money to you via payroll as part of your normal pay, in the form of reduced tax deductions.

I'd hazard a guess and say that they thought you had 2 jobs and allowances were being split between them, hence why one has an L code and one a T code.

What did the letters say? They always say how the code was made up and which employer/pension company should use it.

    Did you have 2 jobs?

You should really find out now.

Possibly. What does your P60 say for the tax year 2011/12. As it's for a previous tax year it will not happen automatically with your new tax code.

    Hi,
    I've never had 2 jobs.
I was working for a company though an agency for a few months, and then the company asked me if I could join them on a permanent basis, so I left the agency and worked directly for the same company.

I cant find my p60 from the agency, but I think I have my latest p60 from the actual employer.
What info from it do you need?

Also, on one of them 4 letters from January, I see that under the section where it says ''how we worked it out'' there is a (-£918) deduction for 'other earnings, (or pension)''
    I had/have neither.
    I only just noticed this!!

Would it be best to just write them a letter bascially explaining what i've written in this thread?

So did you get a P45 from the agency and if so did you pass it to the employer?
I cant find my p60 from the agency,

You wouldn't get a P60 from them if you were not still employed with them on 5th April 2102. You would get a P45 instead.
but I think I have my latest p60 from the actual employer.

Tax code, gross taxable pay, tax paid.

However that's not going to cover the whole tax year so we'd need the agnecy info.

The -£918 must have come from somewhere. Perhaps the agency employment as you didn't hand over a P45?

What is the employer's name on each of the 4 letters?

Might be an idea to get it clarified here first.
