tax code change

Just got my paysilp for this month, and they have taken about 4 times the amount of tax they usually do - hence i'm skint!

tax code has been 810L for the last few months.
Todays paysilp says 358T.

What is that code for? What's the best way to get it fixed?
Is there a sheet to fill in or something to get back this money as well as any other money they may have overcharged me for over the last few years? It seems they're always messing about with this stuff and i'm now paranoid.

cheers

You need to contact your tax office and find out why the tax code was changed.

810L is the tax code for basic personal allowance.

If your tax code has changed you should have received notification of the calculation from HMRC (notice I say should, these things can go astray).

Possible reasons for changes are none taxed income eg Pension or benefits eg Company car/fuel.

Firstly if possible approach your payroll/HR department and see if they will show you the notice of coding they're received, they have to apply it and so can't change it just on your say so but it may give you some information on the reason (but not necessarily).

Next call the HMRC and discuss with them the reason for the change. This is the only way you will know whether the change in coding is accurate and what you need to do to notify them of errors.
    Kate short for Bob.

Kate/Bob sums it up nicely, but don't bother going to payroll / HR for a copy of the tax coding notice. The employers copy (P6) only shows the final code number. In order to protect the confidentiality of your tax affairs the P6 doesn't provide any information about how your code was calculated. If you haven't received your tax coding notice (P2) get in touch with HMRC as soon as possible.

First ask your employer to confirm that the code really is yours and it's not just a data entry mistake by them. If it is yours then you'll need to contact HMRC to find out what's happening. Your employer has to use the code provided and can't tell you anything useful besides confirming it really is the code that HMRC has told them to use.

    Cheers.
That's what I read when I first googled my new tax code.
I don't get any kind of benifit or pension or allowance or anything.
Literally me in a warehouse unloading lorries.

I tmust be some kind of error?

Assuming it gets fixed, I guess i'll be on the breadline for a month until my next pay packet?? :(

It won't get fixed without you first checking with your employer that it wasn't a mistake, then phoning HMRC. The HMRC people I've spoken to on the phone have always been friendly and helpful so it's not something to worry about. The sooner you call, the sooner it'll end up fixed.

    I just spoke to them.
The guy said he's changed my code back to what it was before and I shuld get the money back in my next wage slip, next month, so i'll be a little poorrer for a while.
Didn't tell me how it had happened.

I wonder how I get them to check that they haven't taken too much money from me in the past aswell? Seems they change things for no reason and don't fix it unless you notice and ring them up. Maybe they've messed up my tax code already a few times this year and i'm owed money? Is there some sort of form to check?
