Nigel Slater wrote about little pies made with hot water crust (as used for pork pies) filled with potato, onion, cheese and anchovies. http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2013/aug/18/pie-pastry-recipes-nigel-slater

The basic idea struck me as very money saving.

    1. lard is very cheap fat.
    2. potatoes, onions and cheese can be quite cheap.
    3. cold they would be good transporters for lunchboxes.

So assuming the anchovies are a no-no on cost but could be replaced with some rubbed sage or a single sardine in the mix, what would they cost?

Also would brush with milk rather than using up an egg for the joining and wash.

Super six this week is all 69p
    Pack 3 peppers
    pack 4 white onions
    pack of 4 figs
750g sweet potatoes (approx 4/5 to a bag depending on size)
    bag 8 small pears
    pack 6 kiwis

I will definitely get the peppers, sweet potatoes, onions and pears, we do not care much for kiwis or figs.
I will freeze the peppers and sweet potatoes. The pears will be bottled, made into chutney and I will also make a pear and ginger jam and a couple of chocolate pear puddings to freeze.
Farmfoods have some Turkey crowns at the moment for £7.95 so I want to get about four while we have the money they will easily make a week's meals from each one. Plus I will have an extra one for Christmas/New year. I usually buy three bags of their chicken mini fillets £10 for 3 or £3.95 each, I get approx four meals for three of us at least from each bag that I use in things such as curry, chicken crumble, pies and pasties, stews, in a Chinese meal, HM chicken nuggets or simply sprinkled with some all purpose seasoning and served with HM wedges etc.

    Hi Butterfly Brain

Firstly, thank you so much for all of your excellent posts in here. I think your ideas are brilliant and I hope to try out lots of them!

I'm planning on making your sausage pilaff tonight with some chorizo-style chipolatas but wanted to check with you about quantities... How much rice should I use for 2 people and how much water? Still 1 mug?

    Thanks,

    Kevin :)

Thank you Kevie :) Use as much as you would normally use in a risotto or with a curry, whatever you find filling. I find that 1 mug of dried rice will swell to two or three times its size so I use 1 mug dried rice to 6 mugs of water for the four of us.
    Hope that helps x

Not sure about this particular recipe, but usually with rice it is 75g rice and 150ml of water per portion.

Sorry Butterfly, I didn't make mysel clear there!

When I asked about the 1 mug of water I meant the mug of water in the recipe that you put in before it goes in the oven...

    Sorry for the confusion!

I am in debt. I love how this thread gives me hope of slashing my food bills and paying chunks off my debt!

My partner is quite a fussy eater, so I think i'm going to do this value shop on my own, and hide the packets!! ha

Someone on an earlier post has said that porridge bulks up chilli and spaghetti. Does anyone know, do you have to pre soak it in water and cook it first or do you just add extra water to the spaghetti?

Can I use it in place of expensive meat?

    Thanks
