It's a bit repetitive, but you could try dal and rice. That's the staple diet for a lot of people in developing countries. A bulk bag of rice, a bulk bag of lentils or yellow split peas, some spices and oil, shouldn't cost more than about a pound a day. Rice is about 45p a kilo in Tesco, split peas about £1.06 a kilo.

If you want 'greens', try foraging - nettle tops, fat hen, wild garlic etc, all widely available free of charge in your local area of wilderness...

  • Super six this week:

    cucumber
    little gem lettuce
    3 pack lemons
    Broccoli
    1kg onions
    4 pack baking potatoes

    all at 39p

    Excellent this week :D

Salad is on the menu because of the weather

I will slice and freeze a couple of packs of the onions.

I will make make lemon curd, lemon tart, lemon self saucing pudding and lemon drizzle cake

We all love jacket potatoes and I will buy a lot of them because they keep for weeks in a cool dark place.

  • We went into Morrison's yesterday and they are doing portobello mushrooms at 39p a pack, I bought six and have peeled and quartered them, do not freeze with skins or blanch because they will go slimy if you do, just peel and slice as with onions,

So I have plenty to add to casseroles, bolognaise, stir fries etc.
I want to get some more to dehydrate them for use in soup and sauces.

  • Very useful info about freezing the mushrooms, Butterfly Brain:T.
I assume the same treatment applies to those small button mushrooms? My outdoor market is practically giving them away in bulk as they are packing up on a Saturday afternoon but I rarely buy loads of them because I didn't know how to keep them for any length of time without them going slimy:o. Would it be necessary to peel the little button ones? I read somewhere to sautee them before freezing but I don't want to do that if I can help it.

I never peel mushrooms before I freeze them and I've never had a problem with them.
Just chop them up and put into a bag straight into the freezer :)
