Soup? I make a leek and tomato soup or parsnip soup, very cheap, very filling as well.
Eggs? Boiled, fried, frittata?
Tortilla wraps with veg?0 -

What recipes do you have in mind so worried; Is this just for yourself or are you involving the whole family?Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Just for me BB, I don't think I can afford to really do recipes. That is where I'm stumped for ideas£36/£240

Gosh tough one.
Flour and water would make pancakes, Yorkshire puddings, flat breads. That sort of things. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
ASDA Smartprice Frozen Mixed Vegetables 77p
ASDA SmartPrice Legs £2.24
ASDA SmartPrice ASDA gravy 20p
ASDA Smartprice SP Eggs 15pk £1.25
ASDA Smartprice Long Grain Rice 40p
ASDA Smartprice Tinned potatoes 15p
Total = £5.01
I found this really difficult for £1 a day for 5 days but here is my contribution.
Breakfasts, omelette with 2 eggs and mixed veg
Lunches, chicken soup made with the bones and pickings, mixed veg, potatoes and gravy.
Dinners, chicken with rice, veg and gravy. or Fried rice with chicken and veg.
This would leave 5 eggs which could be added to other meals or boiled for a snack - fortunately eggs are both cheap and very filling!
I would be keeping the fat from the chicken and using it to fry omelettes and rice/add to gravy as fat is satiating.
I don't like cereals/breakfast foods and I don't eat many sweet foods so I could eat the above for a week. I think it would be a miserable existence though and whilst it would possibly be enough for me to eat, I am sure others would be hungry. I am also pretty certain you would lose weight on this meal plan so long term would be a disaster.
This is an alternative which has lots of variety but I would find this quite disgusting to live on!

ASDA Smartprice chocolate swiss roll 25p
Total £5
Curried eggs with rice, potato curry, pasta with sauce, tins of stuff, beans on toast, jam on toast, eggy bread and even puddings of swiss roll and custard.
I could probably also eat this but doubt I would feel very healthy even after 5 days! I would be craving salad and veg!0 -
I had a go at this challenge last year - went slightly over if I remember right. I'll see if I can find my notes etc tomorrow. It would be good to try it again this year!£10 a day extra in May '18[B]£35/310[

Work has asked us to take part in the £1 a day challenge in April. This is what I have thought of so far but I would love some help with it
Shopping list
1kg oats 75p
Lemon curd 22p
Beans x 2 48p
Bread 45p
Sausages x 8 66p
Liver and bacon pate 54p
Spaghetti 20p
Chicken meatballs in tomato sauce 40p
Kidney beans 30p
Sweetcorn 35p
Rich tea biscuits 23p
T-bags 20p
Rice pudding 15p
Breakfasts would be 50g of oats made with water and a spoonful of lemon curd to sweeten and add calories.
Lunches
Beans and a sausage on toast for 2 days
Pate sandwich for 3 days
Dinners
75g of spaghetti with half a tin of meatballs for 2 nights
75g of spaghetti with half a tin of kidney beans, sweetcorn and 2 sausages for 2 nights
75g of spaghetti with half a tin of beans and 2 sausages for the last night
The biscuits and rice pudding for snacks spread over the 5 days.
Any ideas to make it more appealing?
How about jacket potatoes with baked beans my local greengrocer does potatoes for 20p lb, even though I buy a sack from Morrisons for £2. The main problem with the £1 a day challenge is that supermarkets do not cater for single units so you are stuck with little choice.
I would use my local butcher and greengrocer to get more variety.
For example I went in to have a chat with mine and explained about the challenge and asked if it was ok to buy a rasher of bacon, a sausage, and a few ounces of mince and how much it would cost, he was happy to help and it came to 80p. My local greengrocer was just as obliging and said if I wanted a couple of mushrooms, an onion, carrot, potatoes and even a few cabbage leaves he would sort it for me.
I am another one who thinks that buying eggs and flour is a good idea, you can make all sorts of things such as pancakes with water, potato pancakes, gnocchi even egg and chips but using poached eggs and HM wedgesBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
