    As it is a big chain, I'd be emailing head office. I would say you were so shocked that it had landed close to your little girl that you paid without argument, but you really don't think they should stack china outside where it could fall on little children passing, and don't think it fair that you should pay if they leave it in a dangerous position.

    Oh come on.....

    You don't HAVE to pay anything at all. Unless they take you to court and a court orders you to do so. Which they won't bother for the sake of the price of a cheap mug.

    This reminds me of a poem I once saw in a gift shop (in the Lakes I think, but don't hold me to that):

    'Lovely to look at, delightful to hold;
    but if you break it, consider it sold'

    I assumed that you'd have to pay in that instance.
    Are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation? :cool:

    Breakable are normally inside shops and have a sign stating `any breakages will need to be paid for`.
    Never seen a shop or store which had breakables outside, even an adult could make the mistake of brushing past them!

    I wouldnt of paid there and then mainly as i dont carry cash on me, BUT i think i would of paid so your not alone there.

    I've seen adults knock over bottles of spirits in supermarkets such as Asda and they have not been asked to pay for it.

    Well true but that's not the same as it being a law you should pay....

    I still think you are meant to pay the wholesale cost if you break their items

    What happens if you break something in a charity shop? The shop didn't pay for the goods in the first place as they were donated!

    I'd have just paid to be honest and moaned that it was my child who i let get too close to the display stand. Yes the display stand was badly placed but it would have been my fault for letting her get too close.

    However, i tend to blame myself for everything.:(
