What would happen if you refused?

Would the shop just have to let it go?

I would be annoyed at havng to part with £5 but in reality your child did cause the breakage and thats lost profit for the shop owner. If you were the shop owner and every penny couinted would you not want to be reimbursed for lost stock ? The fact the lady gave your child a lolly and discounted the price - and as you say you dont feel bad at her - shows she was just following policy which is fair enough.

Oh no the lady was very nice. I can appreciate that in these difficult times jobs aren't easy to find and anyone can be replaced, so not asking me wasn't an option. She was very very nice and gave us a discount when she wasn't meant to.

It's the policy, not the staff member, that I object to!

But if I was the store manager (large chain) I wouldn't put breakable stuff outside!

I assumed it was a small independant shop. Why not email head office to query it, it doesn't need to be a complaint.

I might just do that, I'm not stewing over it or anything, I just wanted to see how everyone else felt about it.

I'm surprised you were asked to pay, and would have politely refused to. It's not as though your daughter was running amok in a glassware shop. An apology should have sufficed.

I'd be tempted to call the shop manager and ask them to move the display - a child could be injured next time and it's in their interests to be safe.

The fact the lady gave your child a lolly and discounted the price - and as you say you dont feel bad at her - shows she was just following policy which is fair enough. I guess she probably would of gotten in trouble herself if she didnt. Does sound as though the display is a bit rubbish but at the end of the day it was knocked. I do agree that parents with kids often get a raw deal. I hate going into places - especially those up market gift shope - and being stared at because they assume your child is going to trash the place !

I disagree. I think place something silly somewhere, then you can't expect it not to get knocked. It's different to for example where when I worked in a shop and a mother let a child mess about with a fizzy drink which promptly went all over a display of clothing and caused a few hundred's of pounds of damage to clothing that had to be destroyed and which incidentally the mother just walked out of the shop. she had been asked to keep hold of the drink because a shop assistant could see something was going to happen, but when the child kicked up a fuss, she gave it back to him. Even though the shop didn't hold the parent liable, it's situations like that that I think a parent should be held accountable.

Where a shop has a silly display, where goods can be easily damaged, then that is the shops fault for placing the display of breakable items in a risky area. If it was a china shop, then that's a different story - because you know a child needs to be right next to you, but otherwise, I think it was a very silly thing to do on the shops behalf.

Well yes, we hadn't even gone into the shop! Had I wanted to go in there, squeak would either have been in my arms or her buggy, I wouldn't have put her down in there. There are lots of little ones walking about there all day, I got the impression from the shop lady it wasn't the first time.

This morning in town, Squeak (nearly 2) was walking with me, and she brushes against a display and a cup fell down, which promptly smashed.

Now these were displayed as 'travel' cups with lids, which are not usually china. Had I known she was walking near something so breakable i'd have moved her. This was in a pedestrianised shopping area, she was no more than 1m away from me, maybe half that. Bear in mind that they had put this stuff OUTSIDE the shop in a flimsy cardboard display thingy on the pavement.
    ............

I did pay for it, without kicking up a fuss, but as the day has gone I've been thinking about it and it doesn't seem fair that they've put something fragile that looks like plastic in a silly place, the one that broke was about a foot from the floor, with no warning at all.

I noticed on my way back that they'd made a 'fragile' sign.

Its just annoyed me really, squeak was minding her own business walking nicely and I had to pay over £5 because the shop chose to put China cups outside.

Sorry - but I'm with the shop on this one...

You freely admit that your (less than) 2 year old was toddling along on her own towards a display - you chose not to move her away because you thought the goods were made of plastic.

You said "Had I known she was walking near something so breakable i'd have moved her"... why is it even OK to let your child 'brush' against a store display with non-breakable goods? They can still be knocked over.

You saw it was an accident waiting to happen and chose not to prevent it - toddlers have limited co-ordination and need to be taught not to touch shop displays so it should have been obvious that you needed to steer her away from the display - simples.
