Because they put it in a stupid place. I have owned a shop and worked in retail, but I'm firmly with the customer - if I put something in a silly place, it's my own fault. In the shop, the display id a different story, but outside - I'm sorry but it's just asking for trouble and I think the law is on the side of the customer. Displays of items have to displayed reasonably and if they're not, it's the shops fault, it's a health and safety issue too.
I suspect many other companies would have let the customer off.
I'm sorry, but breakable cups in a cardboard stand? You bet ya, that that won't have been the only incident.MSE Forum's favourite nutter :T0 -
She wasn't walking towards it... She was at my side, with my full attention, walking PAST it.
I do tell her not to touch shop displays.
She was out of the buggy, yes. She is an intelligent active child with a good idea of how to behave.
Tbh does my head in when I see perfectly healthy children in buggies till the age of 3/4 (i know they are fine - I know the parents!) They are the kids that run amok age 4 because they've always been in a buggy prior to then and have no idea about how to behave!
ETA I didn't wait to be asked, she was there before I had even finished picking up the broken pieces off the ground.Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

As this was outside the shop, it could have been a major disaster if a blind or partially sighted person had walked into it. Silly shop!!0

As it is a big chain, I'd be emailing head office. I would say you were so shocked that it had landed close to your little girl that you paid without argument, but you really don't think they should stack china outside where it could fall on little children passing, and don't think it fair that you should pay if they leave it in a dangerous position.0

My little darling threw a bottle of chocolate milk on the floor in Mr T and it smashed, so I told the staff so they could clean it up. I assumed they wouldn't ask me to pay for it

Lots of apology gets you everywhere.

...... This was in a pedestrianised shopping area, she was no more than 1m away from me, maybe half that. Bear in mind that they had put this stuff OUTSIDE the shop in a flimsy cardboard display thingy on the pavement .............
Sounds to me like the shop was obstructing the public footway with the goods for sale - this is banned locally for reasons of safety. Your LA will have a policy on this, might be worth a look.
As has been said, a blind or partially sighted person could have been injured by this as the display does not sound sturdy or stable.I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
I have never broken a shop's item before, but when I was little my Parents used to say don't touch, be careful etc because if you brake or damage you will have to pay for it.
Why on earth wouldn't you pay? Your Daughter ruined their stock she is your responsibility, and it's hardly setting a good example having an attitude like the one you are projecting on here.0 -
Rollnchips - I did sodding well pay - and apologize!
It's only later I've thought hang on that was a stupid place to put China cups, if I wasn't even in the shop, its not my fault they've obstructed the walkway.
And 23 months is a little young to understand having to pay for it
I'm also not projecting 'my attitude' on to my children. I'm not sure what you mean.Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

You didn't want to pay and you feel resentful for the way you were treated, which most rational people would think was appropriatedly.0 -

I'll bet you were toilet trained at 6 weeks as well :rotfl:
She is 23 months so not quite 2 and very well behaved. I don't know why I'm having to defend her for accidentally brushing against something.
I could understand it if she was running around screaming but she wasn't...
I don't feel resentful because I paid, its because it was avoidable by them being too daft not to pit breakable stuff outside on flimsy cardboard stands. Sheesh.Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession
