The cynical part of me wonders if it's a moneyspinner for a struggling shop

Oh dear, my conspiracy theory is showing again.0 -
If you are concerned and the shop is a chain, you could write to head office and explain the situation.
However I think the main point here is that the display is clearly not safe. If the cup had hit her on the head, this would be very different - and actually, it could have done. Less being concerned about paying for it, perhaps they should be recording it in the accident book as a near miss and doing something about it.I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off

Got to admit, I'd expect a 1 year old to be either in a buggy or to have their hand held (or reins if you like them - not that keen on them myself) when in a shopping centre.
If my child broke something in/outside a shop I'd expect to pay for it (I'd offer, rather than waiting to be asked).
Regardless of whether or not the travel cups are china, they wouldn't have got broken if your DD hadn't walked into the display, and on that basis I think its reasonable that you pay.
Having said that, I don't think its a particularly sensible place to put them.
Sounds like it was all handled nicely, calmly and in a friendly manner by both you and the shop assistant, so probably best to forget about it now.0 -
The display was outside the shop, OUTSIDE THE SHOP for those of you who have missed this point. It's not your fault OP. Go and get your £5 back and spend it on squeak.Pants0

Is this true? If you break shop stock, why on earth would you not expect to pay for it?19lottie82 wrote: »you don't have to pay if you break something by accident.I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

Set up a camera somewhere to film the display. Sell the resultant film under "How to offload breakable stock that's not selling". Get your money back and more.

If it is Clintons ( I know Delain is keeping schtum) I am pretty sure they were going, or went into receivership. Although they are not going to save themselves by playing on the good nature of Mums with wandering toddlers, perhaps the staff member was a bit edgy about losing stock on that basis!0 -
You know you only have to pay the 'cost' price of the product - not the retail price.
I know the score - i've got a 3 year old boy. We know he's our responsibility and if he breaks something; we have to pay for it (much like it is at home!)0 -

Just because something is outside a store doesn't mean a parent should take less care.
The toddler knocked something over - the parent freely admits she could have stopped it from happening but thought the display had plastic items not china... so let her child bump into it anyway.:hello:0 -
I'm in two minds over this.
On the one side, the child knocked something off a display.
On the other hand, it was an accident, not caused by unsupervised bratling running amock inside a shop.
I'm surprised they asked over such a low value item.
(:o I dropped one of those huge Yankee candles in a glass jar in clintons a couple of weeks ago and the damn thing broke. They were on a low level shelf in front of the till. I picked it up by the top and found myself holding a lid with a smashed up candle and glass by my feet. I did tell the assistant who was serving and she didn't ask me to pay, she didn't clear it up either or call anyone, so I had to sort of kick the glass towards the counter and warn those behind me. And stand there with a very red face.)Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
